Michael G. Santos Life

Michael Gerard Santos (born January 15, 1964) is an American prison consultant, author of many books on incarceration, a professor of criminal justice, and an advocate for criminal justice reform.

Santos served in nineteen different federal jails in the United States for twenty-six years.

Santos began to commit to change his life, obtained an education, got married, wrote several books, and continued to prepare himself for a happy law-abiding life during his decades in federal prison.

Santos served more than twenty-six years in prison than in a forty-five-year sentence. Santos taught a San Francisco State University criminal justice undergraduate class as a prison counselor, motivational speaker, and life coach, and he continues to advocate for reforming America's criminal justice system.

Early life

In Lake Forest Park, a suburb of North Seattle, Michael Santos grew up with two sisters. He had a relatively stable family life. Santos is the son of a Cuban immigrant father and a mother of Spanish descent. His parents were small business owners.

Santos attended Shorecrest High School. He was a poor student, played football, and skied on the team. In 1982, Santos graduated from high school. A judge sentenced Santos to probation for taking uninsured property (given to Santos as partial payment of gambling debt owed to him) while he was in high school. This was the full extent of Santos' criminal history before he was found guilty of selling cocaine.
