Michael Poulsen Career

Career

Poulsen formed his first band, Dominus, in Copenhagen at the age of 17. Chuck Schuldiner and his band Death, he said, had a major influence during this period.

Between 1994 and 2000, Dominus released four records. A year later, the band disbanded out, poulsen being fed up with death metal music and the death metal scene. He produced new songs with a more rock 'n' roll feel and a solid Volbeat beat. The Songs' debut album The Strength / The Sound / The Songs debuted at number 18 in the Danish charts and became the first album of a Danish metal band in 20 years to debut in the top 20. Poulsen performed in Copenhagen on April 22, 2006, with some of Elvis Presley's studio musicians. Volbeat's sophomore album Rock the Rebel / Metal the Devil and their third attempt Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood debuted in the Danish charts in first place.

Poulsen demonstrated his affinity with Social Distortion later in life, as well as taking cues from a "new influence" that inspired Volbeat's distinctive sound.

Poulsen's father, who was a huge fan of Volbeat, died on June 27, 2008, a few months before the release of Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood. At his funeral, the song "Light a Way" from the same album was performed. With a letter on each finger except the thumb, a week after his father Poulsen tattooed their names, Jrn and Else. Poulsen's father inspired later songs, "Fallen" (Beyond Hell/Above Heaven) and "Our Loved Ones" (Outlaw Gentleman & Shady Ladies).

Poulsen wrote a liner note for the Relapse Records reissue of Death's 1990 album Spiritual Healing, which he regards as one of his favorite albums.

Poulsen did a verse in "Highwayman," a Jimmy Webb song covered by Iced Earth on the album Plagues of Babylon in 2014. The Iced Earth's interpretation of "Highwayman" was done in the style of the country supergroup The Highwaymen's "cover." In the song, Poulsen sings the same verse as Johnny Cash sings.
