Michael Peca Career

Playing career

After being selected in the first round of the 1990 player draft, Peca began his junior career with the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He was traded to Ottawa 67's where he blossomed into one of the top offensive players in the league. In the 1992 NHL Entry Draft, he was drafted in the second round, 40th overall, by the Vancouver Canucks. He made his NHL debut with the Canucks in 1993–94 season, appearing four games before being a regular in the lockout-shortened 1994–95 season. Alexander Mogilny was then traded to the Buffalo Sabres from Buffalo to Vancouver as part of a deal that brought Alexander Mogilny from Buffalo to Vancouver.

In 1996–97 and 2001–02, Peca twice earned the Frank J. Selke Trophy for being the best defensive forward. In 1999, he led the Buffalo Sabres to the Stanley Cup Finals. Because of his penchant for delivering bone-crushing open ice hits, Capt. Crunch" became his nickname. During the 1998-98 season, Peca was suspended three games by the NHL for an unlawful hit on Vancouver Canucks defenseman Mattias hlund on March 26, 1998.

Peca and the Buffalo Sabres could not decide on a deal for the 2000-2001 season. Peca went without a deal for the entire season. Peca was traded to the New York Islanders in exchange for Tim Connolly and Taylor Pyatt, who coached the Islanders to their first playoff appearance in seven years. In game five of the first round, Peca was hip-checked by Toronto Maple Leafs' Darcy Tucker during the 2002 Stanley Cup playoffs. The check knocked out Peca's MCL and ACL on his left knee, putting him out of his season and delaying his entry into the 2002-03 season. There was no penalty, but the NHL made clipping unlawful as a result of the incident.

The Edmonton Oilers acquired Peca in a trade with the Islanders in exchange for Mike York. He was a member of the Cinderella Edmonton Oiler team, which made a bid for the Stanley Cup Finals. In the 2006 playoffs, Peca had six goals and five assists.

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced on July 18, 2006, that they had signed Peca as a free agent to a one-year, $2.5 million deal, including Tucker and Peca teammates. Peca collided with Chicago defenseman Jim Vandermeer with 5:17 left in the first period during a game against the Chicago Blackhawks on December 22, 2006. For the assault, Vandermeer was given a minor penalty and a game offence. Peca sustained a fractured tibia at the base of his right leg and sustained significant ligament damage, and missed the remainder of the 2006-07 season.

Peca signed a one-year deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets on August 21, 2007. After grabbing referee Greg Kimmerly's arm in Columbus' first game of the 2008–09 season, he received an indefinite suspension (later reduced to a five-game suspension).

Peca resigned from professional hockey on January 19, 2010 through the National Hockey League Players' Union (NHLPA).

Coaching career

Peca was named head coach of the Buffalo Jr. Sabres of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL), where he served from 2012–2013. He was named OJHL Coach of the Year after the 2012–13 season. He had 66 victories in 108 regular season games during his two years as a coach. In addition to his work as general manager and director of hockey operations for the Buffalo Jr. Sabres, Michael Peca served as head coach of the Bantam Major Jr. Sabres.

Peca was hired by the Washington Capitals on February 10, 2021, to be a player growth coach working with the "taxi squad" players for the 2020–21 season. In 2021, he was hired by the Buffalo Sabres as an assistant coach with their American Hockey League affiliate, the Rochester Americans.
