Vinicius Jr opened the scoring for the visitors at Bayern Munich 24 minutes into the Champions League semi-final first-leg.  Fans on X (formerly Twitter) were impressed with the 34-year-old's 'football IQ', and the way he was able to coach on the field against his former club.

Huge change to VAR that fans desperately want is being considered by Premier League officials in biggest revamp since the system was introduced

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 30, 2024
KIERAN GILL: Mail Sport revealed in January how this initiative was set to be introduced for next season and Webb spoke on Tuesday night on why they want to improve the fan experience. Football's lawmakers IFAB have spent more than a year trialling this idea and, with broadcasting the live conversation between referees and VARs still not permitted, the Premier League sees this as the next best solution to lessening confusion.

Referees chief Howard Webb will hold peace talks with Nottingham Forest this week after furious statement blasting decisions and Stuart Attwell... with VAR audio set to be played at the meeting

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 24, 2024
MATT HUGHES:Referees' chief Howard Webb will hold peace talks with Nottingham Forest's owners this week at which the VAR audio of their three penalty appeals in Sunday's controversial defeat at Everton will be played to the club.  Forest requested access to referee Anthony Taylor's conversations with VAR Stuart Atwell earlier this week after criticising the latter's appointment for the game at Goodison Park on the grounds that he is a "Luton fan," with refereeing body PGMOL happy to oblige. PGMOL's protocol is to make VAR audio available to any club that requests it, with Webb understood to be planning to play the recordings to Forest in an online meeting this week before their next game against Manchester City on Sunday.

Nottingham Forest WILL be sent audio of VAR recordings from 2-0 defeat by Everton after club's furious statement slamming referees' chiefs - with controversy to be discussed on TV next week

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 23, 2024
EXCLUSIVE BY MATT HUGHES: Nottingham Forest will be sent recordings of conversations between referee Anthony Taylor and VAR Stuart Attwell from their defeat by Everton by PGMOL over the next few days, and the audio could be broadcast publicly when the next Referees Mic'd Up programme airs next week.  Mail Sport has learned that one of Forest's three penalty appeals which were not referred to VAR by Taylor is likely to feature in next week's show, in which PGMOL chief Howard Webb and Michael Owen analyse recent refereeing decisions in the Premier League. Forest demanded that audio recordings of the three incidents be made public in a series of extraordinary statements released on Monday, which could see the club, manager Nuno Espirito Santos, defender Neco Williams and refereeing consultant Mark Clattenburg all charged by the FA.

How Tottenham's thunderbolt Micky van de Ven became the Premier League's fastest EVER player... and the club who said he wasn't quick enough

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 13, 2024
KIERAN GILL: Time spent getting to know the thunderbolt of Tottenham revealed a rise equally as rapid, though Micky van de Ven's sprint to stardom was not without the odd stumble, a particularly painful one arriving at 16 years old when told he lacked the speed to succeed. It is a ludicrous tale - how a club in the Dutch second division came so close to discarding the defender now testing the shutter speeds of photographers' cameras at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Today, he holds the Premier League record as its fastest-ever player, previously clocked at 23.23mph. Back then, he supposedly smuggled lead in his socks, a story which Van de Ven's father, Marcel, related to Mail Sport this week. 'When the Volendam trainer said, "You're not fast enough and not good enough", I understood that a kid who's 16 might think, "That's it. I'm done. I have to go",' Marcel said, speaking from his native Netherlands. 'But I told him, "This is the best message they are ever going to give you. You know you can play, so play. If you think they are going to send you away, just play. And if they send you away, I will bring you to the club where you can play with your friends. But for now, go on. Do what you like. Do what you love. Do what you want. Live your dream".

Liverpool fans joke they owe Michael Owen an 'apology' as icon's previous comments on Darwin Nunez resurface after the Uruguayan's glaring miss against Atalanta

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 12, 2024
Liverpool fans have offered Michael Owen an apology after previously criticising the club icon's advice that he offered to struggling Reds striker Darwin Nunez back in February. Nunez has struggled to live up to the club record £85m price tag that he arrived at Liverpool with two-years ago and endured another erroneous evening in front of goal against Atalanta on Thursday.

Rio Ferdinand explains why England lost to Brazil in the 2002 World Cup quarter-finals, citing TWO reasons why he didn't win anything during his career

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 4, 2024
The 2000s England squad was a sight to behold, featuring some of the world's most iconic names, including David Beckham, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Paul Scholes, Wayne Rooney, and Michael Owen. Return to the beginning with a defense of Ferdinand, John Terry, Ashley Cole, Gary Neville, and David James, and you'll see why FA chief Adam Crozier dubbed them the 'Golden Generation.' However, they only made it to a string of quarter-finals before struggling to qualify for Euro 2008 and then falling out of the 2010 World Cup in the last 16 to Germany.

Part ONE of the Man United idol, the most prolific striker in English history, and the Brazilian who failed to make the majority of his talents

OLIVER HOLT: Any list - your list as well as mine - can be dominated by those who are not on it. However, it should really be about the participants who are on it. This list is meant to be a salute to them and of football's rich, rich past, as well as what the game means to all of us and what players represent and why they capture something in us. You'll disagree with some of the names on the list, and you'll be correct. Another man's garbage is another man's treasure. The depth of our passion for the game and the ferocity of our opinions about the players are only two of the factors that make football so beautiful.

How Jamie Cassidy, a teen, was supposed to be a star in football before he stepped into the dark world of drugs and organized crime as he begins a 13-year sentence in prison

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 21, 2024
He was destined for football stardom as a youth. Jamie Cassidy, a 12-year-old boy, joined the Liverpool FC Academy at the age of 12, followed club legends Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher. He earned a coveted place at Lilleshall's School of Excellence in Oxford, and by the age of 15, he was England's top goal scorer, with three others scoring three in the European Under-16s Championships in 1994, particularly netting three in the European Under-16s Championships. Cassidy, a sophomore at Liverpool, was one of the club's first FA Youth Cup winners, defeating future internationals Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand, then of West Ham United, in a tense final two years. Photographs from the day depict an ecstatic Cassidy gyrinng broadly and holding the trophy aloft on the Anfield pitch. Unfortunately, this was the only major trophy he'd like to own. Because Cassidy was releasing from his boyhood club at the age of 21, he turned to heroin and the underground world of organized crime to gain the funds he had hoped for on the football field before his injury ruined his fledgling career, and before it could begin. At Manchester Crown Court on Thursday, his reprieve was complete, when he was sentenced to 13 years and three months.

'Class of 93': How England U-15 colleagues of drugs trafficker Jamie Cassidy became physiotherapists, or drifted into obscurity

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 21, 2024
The England under-16 team's top scorer for the Merseyside Prosecutors at the age of 15, Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher, was Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher. Although never in the same criminal manner, the England team with him at the European under-15 championships in 1993 also failed to reach the highs aspirations. One person was tragically injured in a car accident, but the majority of the population, including Ipswich Town legend Richard Wright, failed to meet the highest standards for their nation. Only a few people made it to the Premier League, with the majority of the rest of the squad playing at a lower level or completely dropping out of professional football. Some became doctors, others went into banking and building. MailOnline explores what became of the forgotten 'Class of 93', which includes its deceased actor Jamie Cassidy.

Cassidy (pictured winning the 1994 FA Youth Cup and in a police mugshot) was on hand with Liverpool FC legends Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher and was destined for a glittering career in the sport as a youth. He was England's top goal scorer, even scoring three in the European Championships in 1994, and he was awarded a place at the FA School of Excellence in Lilleshall at the age of 15. However, when his fledgling career was marred by injury, he was released from his beloved Liverpool FC, Cassidy, now 46, turned to heroin and organised crime. He was sentenced to 13 years and three months in connection with a drug trafficking racket involving 356 kilograms of cocaine and an estimated street value of £28 million ($35.8 million) flood cities around northern England on today. He was England's best goal scorer, even netting three in the European Championships in 1994, and he was awarded a spot at Lilleshall's FA School of Excellence. A few years ago, the attacking midfielder was part of the Liverpool team that lifted the FA Youth Cup with a 4-1 victory over two legs against a formidable West Ham squad starring Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard. CHRIS WHEELER recalls Manchester United's past glory after their 3-2 victory over Liverpool... but does he agree with his picks?

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 18, 2024
CHRIS WHEELER: Old Trafford has seen some classic games in recent times, and Manchester United's dramatic FA Cup quarter-final victory over Liverpool on Sunday was up there with the best of them. United's cameback to defeat their bitter rivals 4-3, with a 121st-minute goal from Amad Diallo, who was running late in normal time and again in extra-time. I was screaming and I couldn't hear my voice, so you get a sense of what the noise was like for us on the pitch,' said captain Bruno Fernandes afterwards.'

How a Liverpool prodigy once picked over Steven Gerrard swamped Britain's streets with cocaine: Inside the dramatic rise and fall of 'certain future international' Jamie Cassidy who turned to organised crime when injury left his football career in tatters

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 15, 2024
Even Steven Gerrard was once operating in the shadow of Jamie Cassidy (pictured left), and the teen was chosen ahead of the future England captain for the FA's center of excellence, earning the highest accolades of all. He performed with Jamie Carragher (bottom right and top right) and Michael Owen (top right). Cassidy, the England under-16 team's top scorer in the 1993-94 season, scored six goals, three in the European under-16 championships, all at the age of 15. Cassidy's life took a different route after a string of injuries. This week, he will be sentenced to prison for being involved in a large-scale exportation of cocaine from South America to Europe.

After West Ham were denied a late penalty in Thursday's Europa League round of 16 first-leg matches in Germany, Michael Owen has slammed the handball decision as a "total mess." Noah Weisshaupt, who seemed to have his arm raised in an unnatural manner, intercepted a cross into the box destined for the head of Czech foreign Tomas Soucek.

The remakes of British TV classics that are BETTER than the originals and where to watch them on streaming (and the shows that were better first time around)

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 7, 2024
Magic formulas must exist for successful TV shows, but actors and writers have yet to find a foolproof spell. Instead, they keep falling back on the classics, remaking favourite shows in the hopes that lightning will strike twice. Here we examine eight classics and compare them to their remakes - some are better than the original, some are more popular but equally good, and at least one of them is a horrible clunker.

Michael Owen's racehorse trainer is sued for £470,000 by stablehand who suffered serious neck injuries when he was kicked in the head by thorougbred colt at his former Newmarket HQ

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 6, 2024
While working at Hugo Palmer's Kremlin Cottage stables in Newmarket, Suffolk four years ago, John Mitchell, 51, claims he was assaulted by 'dangerous' thoroughbred racer London Palladium. Mr Palmer later joined Manor House Stables in Cheshire, where he worked with ex-England striker Michael Owen. During the assault, Mr Mitchell says the rearing colt kicked him in the head with both of its front legs, causing him to suffer a crippling neck injury and is now suing for damages. Mr Palmer's lawyers (pictured left with Michael Owen) deny the charge, but insist that the veteran stable hand in the suspected altercation caused no injury.'

Was Marcus Rashford to blame for Phil Foden's equaliser? After being 'lying on the ground for a minute' after Kyle Walker's challenge, Michael Owen says the Man United actor was out of place

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 4, 2024
Rashford was then at the center of City's equalizer after being told he was fouled by Kyle Walker moments before Foden pulled a goal back for the hosts. City continued to make the most of the game's momentum, with Foden netting again before Erling Haaland's side claimed the points with their third goal, leaving them just one point behind league leaders Liverpool. The turbulent time leading up to City's equalizer divided opinion, with Erik ten Hag arguing that the assault on Rashford was not a foul but Gary Neville believed it was appropriate to continue playing.

FORT MAN: Forever, Jurgen Klopp's last lap at Liverpool or Arsenal's return to glory... Manchester City is creeping up on another treble by theft

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 29, 2024
IAN LADYMAN: Manchester City's inexorable climb to what promises to be a landmark and incredibly stunning series of treble continues almost in silence amid the tumultuous chaos and hum of another Premier League season finale. This is not a sly dig at the Etihad's atmosphere. Others will disagree on this subject. I haven't found anything wrong with it personally. No, it is not that. It's a remark on how a lion hunts, I suppose. Or how a cobra moves across the grass. Silently. There's no fuss here. However, it went well. Ah, so predictably well.

During Inter Milan's Champions League match against Atletico Madrid, Michael Owen labels Marko Arnautovic as 'ARROGANT' for suspected no-looks during Inter Milan's Champions League match against Atletico Madrid

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 21, 2024
Inter beat Atletico 1-0 at the San Siro, with Arnautovic coming off the bench and missing two big chances before scoring the winner. The Austrian has joined Inter on loan from Bologna as they look to do one better than last season and win Europe's premier club competition. Owen, on the other hand, was unimpressed with Arnautovic's attempt to score without looking.

Phil Foden is 'the nearest England will be to a Ballon d'Or winner,' according to Thomas Frank, who supports the Man City star in his bid to become the first English player to be recognized

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 20, 2024
Brentford manager Thomas Frank believes Phil Foden will be the fourth Englishman to win the Ballon D'or as his team takes on Manchester City star Thomas Frank tonight. When the two teams met in Gtech Stadium two weeks ago, they scored five goals in their first match against the Bees, who are traveling to Etihad Stadium in the hopes of imitating last season's 2-1 victory. In 2001, Michael Owen became the fourth English player to win football's highest individual award, after Kevin Keegan, who won it in 1976 and 1977, and Stanley Matthews in 1956, the only other recipients.
