Michael Mann has admitted that he wanted Leonardo DiCaprio to appear in a James Dean biopic from the 1990s but that it was delayed because Leo was too young for the role. In an interview with Deadline, the filmmaker, 79, explained that he decided to put the film on hold and concentrated on Al Pacino's 1995 film Heat, starring Robert DeNiro and Val Kilmer, while hoping that his chosen leading man would age into the role. The Academy Award Laureate praised the screenplay for the Dean project and Leo's upcoming appearance as 'brilliant.'
