Michael Gordon Career

Life and career

Gordon was born in Baltimore, Maryland, to Jewish parents Paul Luis Gordon (1876-1957), who was born in Lithuania, and Eva "Rachel" Kuhen (1885-1940), who was born in Russia. Michael was the second of three children born to the Gordon family; first born was Bertram Ira Gordon (1914-1985), a US Navy lieutenant, and the third was Leo Allenby Gordon (1919-2005).

Michael Gordon, a member of the Group Theatre (1935-2004), was blacklisted as a Communist in the McCarthy period. He later joined the UCLA Theater Department's faculty. Gordon spent summers at Pine Brook Country Club in Nichols, Connecticut. Pinebrook is best known for being the Group Theatre's summer home.

Gordon's Hollywood career came in two phases as a result of being blacklisted. He began as a dialogue producer and produced B-movies in 1940. He distinguished himself in the late 1940s by producing action films, melodramas, and films noir. He also produced the 1950 film Cyrano de Bergerac for which José Ferrer received the Best Actor Academy Award.

He was forced to suspend film production for a short time after being blacklisted, but producer Ross Hunter brought him right to Hollywood at the end of the 1950s, a vehicle for Doris Day and Rock Hudson. Gordon's second creative phase was concerned with light-hearted, comedies.

Jonathan, Jane (mother of actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Susannah were three children for Gordon and his wife Elizabeth Cohn.
