Michael Emerson, an American film and television actor best known for his roles as serial killer William Hinks on The Practice, Benjamin Linus on Lost, Zep Hindle in the first Saw film, Cayden James on Arrow, and CBS series Person of Interest, Michael Emerson is an American film and television actor best known for his appearances in The Practice, William Hinks on The Practice.

Emerson has also worked extensively in theater and narration.

He has won two Primetime Emmy Awards and been nominated for three others, as well as other accolades and nominations.

Early life

Emerson was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Carol (née Hansen) and Ronald H. Emerson. He grew up in Toledo, Iowa, where he was a member of his high school marching band.

He graduated from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, where he majored in theatre and minored in art. He attended a semester at The National Theatre Institute at The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center before heading to New York City. Unable to find acting roles, he took retail stores and worked as an illustrator. He moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where (from 1986 to 1993) he appeared in local productions at Theater Jacksonville and The Players by the Sea and taught Flagler College. Emerson earned a Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Alabama in the Alabama Shakespeare Festival acting program after several years of illustration and teaching.

Personal life

Carrie Preston, an Emerson married actress, was born in 1998 in Macon, Georgia. They met in Alabama while he was performing in a stage version of Hamlet. It's his second marriage. In Straight-Jacket (2004), the two actors appeared together. In the flashback sequences of Emerson's character "The Man Behind the Curtain," Preston portrayed Emily Linus (the mother of Emerson's character). In the film Ready, the two characters teamed up again, with Emerson portraying Preston's next-door neighbor.

Emerson appeared in Moises Kaufman's critically acclaimed off-Broadway play Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde in 1997, followed by several other notable stage performances. In 1998, he appeared opposite Uma Thurman in Le Misanthrope's off-Broadway production. Willie Oban appeared in The Iceman Cometh in 1999. In both Give Me Your Answer and Do!, he co-starred with Kate Burton. Hedda Gabler and Hedda Gabler.

In September 2001, Emerson received an Emmy Award as Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for playing serial killer William Hinks in several episodes of The Practice. Emerson first appeared on the serial drama television series Lost in 2006. Emerson was originally supposed to appear in a handful of episodes, but he later returned to Season 3 as a key cast member and eventually became a main antagonist of the show. In 2007, and 2008, he received an Emmy Award in the Outstanding Support Actor category for his roles in the third and fourth seasons. He received the award in 2009 after being nominated for his work in the fifth season.

Emerson was nominated for the Best Achievement by an Actor in a Supporting Role category in 2009. He was nominated for an Emmy for each season in which he was featured in the main cast.

Emerson and Preston read A.R. on July 31, 2010. Love Letters by Gurney, a 1990 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, were on display at the Charleston Stage as a supporter for the theater.

In a comedy-drama script tentatively called Odd Jobs by J. Abrams, Emerson was supposed to reunite with former Lost cast member and friend Terry O'Quinn. It was expected to start filming by the end of 2010, but further research of the project has been delayed. Emerson appeared on CBS in September 2011 as part of another Abrams series, Person of Interest. In New York City, he appeared as a billionaire who collaborated with a ostensibly deceased CIA agent to combat crime.
