Michael Philip Des Barres (born 24 January 1948), the 26th Marquis Des Barres, is an English actor and rock singer.
He is best known for his appearance on the television show MacGyver and for replacing Robert Palmer in the band Power Station, and for fronting the band at the 1985 Live Aid concert.
Early life
Michael Philip Des Barres, the sole child of Marquis Philip and Marquise Des Barres, was born and raised in Hove, Sussex. He went to Repton School, a boarding school in Derbyshire, and then went on to attend the Corona Academy drama school in London, where he appeared in several plays. He has traces of French descent. His Marquis title was bestowed on a 13th-century ancestor, Guillaume II Des Barres, a French knight. After rescuing king Philip II of France in the Battle of Bouvines in 1214, Guillaume II Des Barres was bestowed the title Marquis.
Personal life
Des Barres married Wendy Hamilton, a seven-year-old actress (Professor Emeritus Wendy Wheeler, London Metropolitan University), in 1974. Following the disbandment of Silverhead, Michael and I divorced in Los Angeles.
Des Barres was married to Pamela Des Barres from 1977 to 1991. Nicholas Des Barres, a prolific writer and video game designer, has a son.
Since June 1981, Des Barres has been sober. He was one of the founding members of Rock Against Drugs in the mid-1980s. He later served as a volunteer addiction counselor and worked with homeless people. Des Barres has also produced and hosted the annual Don't Knock the Rock Film Festival, which first took place in 2003.

Career
Des Barres formed Chequered Past in 1982 following Detective's dissolution in 1978. He co-wrote and recorded the song "Obsession" with Holly Knight in 1983. Animotion's cover had a worldwide top-ten hit in 1984.
During their 1984 tour, Des Barres met Duran Duran Duran Duran. Des Barres was selected lead vocalist by Robert Palmer in 1985, right before his American summer tour.

Des Barres has appeared in more than 100 television shows and nearly 30 films in his career. On posters all over England, he appeared on posters as 'The Nux Bar Kid.' In the 1966 film starring Tony Curtis, Drop Dead Darling, he appeared (uncredited). He appeared in the classic 1967 film To Sir, with Love, as a supporting cast member wearing dark sunglasses inside and out, as well as a few other minor roles before deciding to pursue a career in music instead. He later concentrated on acting and appeared in Ghoulies (1985) as cult leader Malcolm Graves and Nightflyers (1987) as a charismatic empath. Des Barres appeared on television, in addition to the role of Murdoc in MacGyver, he was also a lead cast member of The New WKRP in Cincinnati in the 1991-92 season as part of a husband-and-wife morning staff. He had appeared on the original WKRP in Cincinnati as the lead singer of a punk band called Scum of the Earth. On Roseanne he portrayed (Leon's boyfriend) as well as being one of Darlene's baby's doctors as well as appearing as one of the series's final episodes.
