He appeared in London and on Broadway. Ball represented the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1992, finishing second with the song "One Step Out of Time."

He reenacted Marius in Les Misérables: The Dream Cast in Concert, 1995.

Giorgio in Passion (1997) and Caractacus Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Bang (2002) are two of his other West End roles.

He has twice been nominated for Best Actor in a Musical by Laurence Olivier.

He received accolades in 2008 for his work as Edna Turnblad in Hairspray, and then in 2013 for his service to musical theatre.

Early life

Ball was born in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, to a Welsh mother and an English father. Tony, his father, who aspired to be a comedian, began as an Austin apprentice at the Longbridge plant and progressed to become the British Leyland's head of global sales. He received an MBE for services to industry. Ball's maternal grandfather was a coal miner. Kevin, four years old, and Katherine, almost a decade his junior, are two siblings. When he was three years old, he and his parents went to Dartmoor. He never had singing lessons, but as a youth, he learned to sing along to music, for example; Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia Jackson, and Frank Sinatra's songs. He went to Plymouth College, an independent boarding school, because his parents hoped that this would give him a good education when he was 11 years old. However, this made him unhappy because he did not fit into the school's academic and athletic atmosphere at the time. On Sunday morning at the Pathfinder bible group in St Andrew's church, he joined his fellow junior boarders. On the isle of Jersey, he spent one summer at Pathfinder camp.

Ball was interested in the theatre and his father took him to see performances in the school holidays, including one at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Lear, which captivated him as a youngster of about 14 years old. He attended a youth theater, which culminated in him studying drama at Guildford School of Acting, where he discovered a happy environment. On Saturdays in Guildford, with a female student friend, he went busking to earn a little extra cash. He graduated in 1984. Ball's singing career took off after his graduation. Ball's early singing career were lauded by his maternal grandmother, who had a musical ear; she died as a result of a heart attack about a week before his debut in The Pirates of Penzance.

Personal life

Ball stars with Cathy McGowan, the former presenter of Ready Steady Go! They met around 1989 when she was a entertainment reporter for a BBC London magazine show and questioned him during Aspects of Love rehearsals. They have been married since 1992. She saved his son's life by dragging him out of a house fire on December 23, 2000. Cathy was previously married to actor Hywel Bennett, and the union resulted in the birth of Emma, the daughter. Emma Ball's son is Michael Ball's godson.

Ball returned to Guildford School of Acting in April 2022 to address the graduating postgraduates of the year. Although Ball was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Surrey, the University of Surrey granted it.

Grace Crompton of Ball is a member of England's rugby sevens and was selected for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

After 43 years, QUITS' final episode airing on BBC is the company's 50th anniversary of being a member

Garry Richardson, a presenter for BBC Radio 4's Today programme, has departed after 43 years with his last show on September 9 - exactly 50 years since the corporation was established. Since his departure was announced, the news reporter, 68, who is known to millions as he reads headlines from around the world, released an emotional remark. "I have had the most wonderful time working for the BBC alongside my heroes from sport and showbusiness," says the author.

So how DID Paddy McGuinness land coveted Radio 2 slot? After the traumatic Freddie Flintoff accident, the 'broke' comedian's loyalty to the station has been preserved as he prepares for a peach BBC television broadcast career

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 3, 2024
Some faithful listeners have erupted in the wake of Paddy McGuiness's controversial departure from the BBC, but it comes after the comedian demonstrated extraordinary loyalty to the BBC in the aftermath of Top Gear's demise.

After a string of big shake-ups at the BBC station that sparked mass exodus of listeners, Radio 2 supporters have promised to avoid listening as Paddy McGuinness is given the plough

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 2, 2024
Michael Ball's plush 11am slot on Sundays with an as-yet-unspecified design, prompting a protest from veteran Radio 2 listeners who find him off-putting. McGuinness' presence on Saturday's show in recent weeks left a "large impression," according to radio 2's chief, with listeners seated for him on his Saturday show, but listeners to the UK's most popular radio station fear that his presence will 'decimate' the listeners. In the weekday afternoon slot, Radio 2's most popular presenter shake-ups and burn-outs have seen nearly a million listeners fall nearly a million viewers since last year, most notable Ken Bruce's departure and Steve Wright's replacement with Radio 1's Scott Mills. In addition, a number of shows McGuinness has performed have been cancelled or delayed (Quest Gear and Question of Sport, right).
