Melissa Mathison Life

Melissa Marie Mathison (June 3, 1950 – November 4, 2015) was an American film and television screenwriter as well as an advocate for Tibetan independence.

She was best known for writing screenplays for the films The Black Stallion (1979) and E.T. Extra-Terrestrial (1982), the latter of which earned her the Saturn Award for Best Writing and a nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Mathison wrote The Indian in the Cupboard (1995), based on Lynne Reid Banks' 1980 children's book of the same name, and Kundun (1997), a biographical-drama film about the Dalai Lama.

The BFG (2016), her third film project with film director Steven Spielberg, was her last film work.

Early years

Mathison was born in Los Angeles on June 3, 1950, as one of five siblings. Richard Randolph Mathison, her father, was the Los Angeles bureau chief of Newsweek. Margaret Jean (née Kieffer) Mathison, a food blogger and restaurateur of convenience stores, was her mother. Mathison attended the University of California, Berkeley, after graduating from Providence High School in 1968. Her family was friendly with Francis Ford Coppola, whose children were babysat by Mathison. Coppola offered her a job as his secretary on The Godfather Part II (1974), which she had missed during her undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley.

She wrote a script for The Black Stallion, a play that was inspired by Coppola's encouragement, that captured Steven Spielberg's interest.

Personal life and death

Mathison was married to Harrison Ford from 1983 to 2004, but the couple had two children. She died of neuroendocrine cancer in Los Angeles on November 4, 2015.

Harrison Ford and Wife Calista Flockhart Walk First Red Carpet as a Couple in Nearly 5 Years

www.popsugar.co.uk, May 21, 2023
For the first time in nearly five years, Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart met together on the red carpet to celebrate the world premiere of "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. On May 18, the Hollywood couple, who tied the knot after eight years of marriage, flocked to France for the annual festival, which may have marked Ford's last "Indiana Jones" film on view — and they looked joyful as ever as they held hands and posed for cameras. Despite that Ford, 80, has attended several Hollywood appearances lately to promote his Indiana Jones resuming, he and his wife haven't appeared on a red carpet together since the Academy's tenth annual Governors Awards in November 2018. Ford had married twice to Mary Marquardt and Melissa Mathison before they wed, and he welcomed four children from those families. Liam, Flockhart's son who was adopted in 2001, was later adopted by him. Before arriving in Cannes, Flockhart's stylist, Elizabeth Stewart, posted a carousel of photos of the newlywed couple in what seems to be their hotel room, which included one picture of a blown-away Ford peeking in the room. Flockhart, 58, had solo photos taken.
