Melvin George "Mel" Schacher (born April 8, 1951) is best known as the bassist for rock band Grand Funk Railroad.
Early career
Schacher was born in Owosso, Michigan, and raised in Flint, Michigan. At the age of seven, he became interested in music and began playing with his father's banjo. He had progressed to playing guitar and then bass by age twelve. Schacher was also playing in various local bands at the age of fourteen, mostly for wedding receptions and talent competitions.
Professional career
Schacher gave him his first professional break when he was drafted to replace bassist Frank Lugo in Question Mark and the Mysterians, and he praised their hit "96 Tears" (1966). He was invited to join former Terry Knight and Pack drummer Don Brewer, as well as singer/guitarist Mark Farner, who had been playing as the Fabulous Pack but wanted to change musical direction to form a new power trio during this period. Schacher became intrigued by the power trio model, and almost from the moment they appeared at the 1969 Atlanta International Pop Festival, sparking a rousing reception and fast-spreading word of mouth, they achieved international recognition as Grand Funk Railroad.
Grand Funk was one of the top rock bands in the United States from 1969 to 1975, surviving despite a turbulent trade shift toward a more commercial hard rock. They released ten platinum-selling albums and two number one hit singles, as well as several other top-twent hits. Grand Funk, 1976, sparked controversy due to musical inequalities.
In 1980, Farner, Brewer, and Schacher decided to try Grand Funk for the second time. However, Schacher had developed a hankering of flying and decided to sit, although he had a distaste for flying.
Schacher spent the intervening years as an entrepreneur and occasional entertainer until, almost by chance, he rejoined Farner and Brewer in 1996, which was a reunited Grand Funk Railroad. They performed a live concert set in Bosnia, as well as a few new picks for a big anthology project. Farner left the original lineup in 1998 to pursue his solo career. Max Carl (38 Special), Bruce Kulick (Kiss), and Tim Cashion (Bob Seger, Robert Palmer) and the Grand Funk Railroad have performed 40 shows a year to 2012, all around North America.
