Megan McDonald, the niece of a retired NYPD detective, was 20 years old when she was assassinated in 2003 and her body was discovered on a dirt path in upstate New York. She died as a result of blunt force trauma, having been bludgeoned to death inside her own vehicle. Edward Holley, 42, who was paralyzed in a 2007 car accident, was charged with her murder last year. He is set to appear in court this summer. Now the family has shifted their attention to Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler, who they claim obtained a negotiated plea bargain to Holley but did not reveal that he had previously represented another perpetrator. Karen Whalen and Mother Elizabeth McDonald lodged discipline charges against Hoovler and four of his employees, triggering an investigation into the murder investigation. They mainly came from reporting by the Times Herald-Record, which in February published several stories based on a state Police investigative report. According to the Times Union, Hoovler interfered with the investigation and wondered if his prior representation of Andre Thurston, a co-deaster in the case, influenced his behavior after he was elected DA in 2013.

Edward Holley (right), 42, who was paralyzed in a 2007 car accident, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with Megan McDonald's 20-year-old cold case, who died at the age of 20 after being bludgeoned to death at the age of 20. The body of the SUNY Orange County Community College student was discovered in a field in Wallkill, just outside the city of Middletown, and her car was found two days later. Holley, who was already in county jail for violating his parole for a 1021 narcotics offence in October 20, is accused of dating Megan, but the pair had broken up before her death. Holley said his innocence and said he 'loved' Megan as he was led to the arrest, but state police said he had a solid motive and DNA evidence connected him to the offence. In the case of a hearing, he will remain in jail.
