Maxine Clark Career

Career

"The Bear Necessities of Business: Building a Business with Heart" was her first book published in 2006.

She began working at Hecht's, a May Company department store chain's affiliate, after college, and was promoted to the corporate offices in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1976. Clark was born in 1992 and left Payless Shoe Source as the president of the company in 1996.

Clark founded Build-A-Bear Workshop in 1997 after being inspired during a shopping spree by a friend's 10-year-old daughter's 10-year-old daughter's discovery of a Beanie Baby that they weren't looking for. Clark suggested that they could make the toy at home, prompting Clark's decision to open a store to make stuffed animals. Build-A-Bear opened its flagship store in St. Louis Galleria mall in October 1997 and announced an initial public offering in 2004 with 140 stores.

Clark, a retired builder from Build-A-Bear, handover the CEO's position to Sharon Price John in 2013. Clark earned $1.37 million in total compensation in 2013, including a salary of $659,200, a bonus and incentive pay totaling $377,138, as well as $144,365 in stock. She also received $160,415 for a six-month consulting gig plus $25,000 to cover her legal expenses.
