Maxi Jazz Career

Music career

Jazz formed The Soul Food Cafe System as a DJ in 1984, having discovered hip hop a year before. On pirate radio station Reach FM London in 1985/6, he first broadcast the sound as a DJ, DJ Maxi Jazz." In 1987, he took the music to pirate radio station LWR.

Tam Tam Tam Records, Savage Records' dance wing, picked up The Soul Food Cafe Band in 1989. In 1992, Jazz founded Namu Records in order to release the band's music on three EP's and the band toured as a support act to many artists, including Jamiroquai in Amsterdam; Galliano in Switzerland; and Jason Rebello in Brazil. Maxi Jazz and the Soul Food Cafe recorded and released "Original Groovejuice vol. 1" with Revco Records in Deptford, South London, in 1996. Jazz toured Europe after the band dissolved and took time out to collaborate with Jah Wobble on the Invaders of the Heart album, as well as live dates with the Wobble Collective.

Jazz met Rollo Armstrong in a studio and went on to form Faithless, alongside Jamie Catto and Sister Bliss. Compared to the word 'Faithless,' which was chosen during the recording of the album "Salva Mea," he describes himself as a Soka Gakkai Buddhist, his strong convictions and the band's deep personal convictions. Armstrong had ordered Jazz to write a song about resentment, which jazz could relate to his own experiences. Jazz's lyrics can range from upbeat to melancholic. His work spans a variety of personal and social topics, including current affairs and social commentary.

Jazz performed the vocals for the hit Tisto track "Dance4life" in 2006. On the single "My Culture" from the collaborative album 1 Giant Leap, he performed alongside Robbie Williams.

Jazz performed his 50th birthday in Hyde Park, London, on June 15, 2007 by headlining the O2 Wireless Festival for the fifth time. Thousands of fans wished him happy birthday in the encore.

Maxi Jazz & The E-Type Boys, a newly assembled band of musicians, formed in 2015. Jazz plays lead vocals and also plays guitar in the band. They have appeared at a number of festivals, including several at the same locations where Faithless are billed.
