Formica, a former professional with Newell's Old Boys, matriculated himself in the first team in 2008-09 and in Torneo Apertura on December 13, 2008, scoring his first goal in a 3–0 victory over Racing Club. Formica scored his first goal (and scored another) and set up a goal for Leandro Armani in a 3–0 victory over Gimnasia shortly after. Formica was scoring three goals in three games against River Plate, Arsenal de Sarand, and Rosario Central before mid-May. Formica made sixteen appearances after the season ended (having missed four appearances due to a minor injury) and scoring seven.

Formica's first team continued to play and in Torneo Inicial, Formica scored four goals in nineteen appearances. Formica played his first game of Copa Libertadores against Emelec in the first leg, but the team was disqualified in the second leg after a 2–1 score for Emelec. Formica scored twice and set up a goal for Lucas Bernardi in a 6–1 win over Gimnasia, the team's first goal of the season.

With names like Ajax, AS Monaco, Galatasaray, and Arsenal, his good results attracted European attention. Rubin Kazan of Russia made a bid for Formica, but the bid was turned down. River Plate tried to sign him right away, but the bid was turned down shortly thereafter.

Despite rebuffing bids from Europe, Formica's playing time was reduced under new manager Roberto Sensini. Despite being disqualified, Formica continued his good form in Copa Sudamericana, scoring three goals against Estudiantes and a brace against Club San José.

Formica, who debuted with Newell's Old Boys, played 84 games for the club, scoring 22 goals in total. Formica is best known for his ability, dribbling, and speed when attending Newell's Old Boys. He is also known for his spectacular shot from half-distance.

Formica signed for Blackburn Rovers on a four-year contract on the last day of the transfer window, earning about £4 million. Formica was viewed as a youthful Gabriel Batistuta by then-manager, who believes he has the best chances in Argentine football. However, Formica did not make it into the team and instead for Blackburn reserves, often due to a lack of match fitness.

Kean praised Formica as a future superstar in Rovers' second season, and the team's second season, Formica, defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers in a 2–1 loss at Ewood Park on August 13, 2011. In a 3–1 loss at Villa Park against Aston Villa on August 20, he came on for Jason Roberts on 75 minutes. Formica scored two penalties in a home league match against Everton on August 27, 2011. He missed one and Junior Hoilett did not, and the match ended with Everton winning 11-0. Formica was supposed to leave Blackburn in January, but the club's player, Matt Barnes, was expected to leave the club due to personal reasons. Formica reported the club had turned back to his former club a few days ago, when Blackburn wanted to sell for €5 million. Formica was also linked with a move to Olympiacos, where he would join his brother, who is playing for a different Greek team in mid-January. Mauro want to leave Blackburn, according to his brother, although the club is still in possession of the transfer to Greece fell through, as the club was unable to meet Blackburn's asking price. Formica will face Tottenham Hotspur, Fulham, and Norwich City later this season. However, Blackburn were relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.

Due to a change of leadership, Formica was in and out of the first team. Formica scored his first goal of the season on Saturday in a 4–1 victory over Peterborough United and a few weeks later, Formica was defeated in a 4–1 loss against Cardiff City on November 17th. Formica hadn't played since December and January due to a knee injury.

Palermo, a struggle, announced on January 23rd on their website that they had signed Formica on loan until the end of the season, with the option to make the transfer permanent during the loan period. In a 1–1 draw at Cagliari, he made his debut four days later as a second-half substitute for Josip Iliii.
