Manchester United's hopes of securing European qualification were dealt a significant blow as Chelsea defeated Tottenham. Trevoh Chalobah and Nicolas Jackson netted at Stamford Bridge on Thursday as Mauricio Pochettino's resurgent side moved to within three points of United in sixth. Despite winning just one of their last five, Erik ten Hag's side maintained an outside ambition of leapfrogging Spurs before the end of the season to secure a Champions League place.

Conor Gallagher made a x-rated comment towards the referee during Chelsea's clash with Tottenham. Mauricio Pochettino's men returned to winning ways on Thursday night as they claimed a comfortable 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge to keep their European hopes alive. In the latter stages of the match Gallagher was penalised for a foul and the midfielder strongly disagreed with referee Robert Jones. 

Mauricio Pochettino suggested he would need more time to make Chelsea a consistent force in the Premier League after a 2-0 win over Tottenham, but realises remaining at the club is 'not my decision'. After a run of disappointing results - including an FA Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester City, a 5-0 thrashing by Arsenal and a draw at Aston Villa - the Blues were back to winning ways courtesy of headers from Trevoh Chalobah and Nicolas Jackson to go eighth in the table. And the manager used the safety net of three points against his former club to make what could be viewed as an appeal to the club's decision makers to show renewed faith.

CHELSEA 2-0 TOTTENHAM - MATT BARLOW AT STAMFORD BRIDGE: Tottenham's flying start to life under Ange Postecoglou already seems like a fading memory. They took 26 points from the first 10 games in scintillating fashion and were five points clear at the Premier League summit after beating Crystal Palace one Friday night near the end of October. It was Chelsea who brought that sequence to a shuddering halt next time out and, last night, another beating at the hands of former boss Mauricio Pochettino left Postecoglou fuming on the touchline.

KIERAN GILL AT STAMFORD BRIDGE: Tottenham's Champions League hopes were dealt a damaging blow as they fell to a 2-0 Premier League defeat by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Ange Postecoglou's side were left trailing fourth-placed Aston Villa by seven points and now have just a single game in hand. Goals from Trevoh Chalobah and Nicolas Jackson saw Mauricio Pochettino emerge victorious against his former club to enhance his team's own chances of qualifying for Europe.

Ange Postecoglou was left fuming at his Tottenham players after a dismal first half perfroamnce against Chelsea.  After a north London derby defeat on the weekend, Tottenham were keen to respond in style against Mauricio Pochettino's side.  However, their poor start to the game was punished  when Trevoh Chalobah opened the scoring to give Chelsea the lead. 

Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing a former Arsenal goalkeeper this summer. There have been many instances of players transferring directly between the London rivals, such as when Kai Havertz joined Arsenal from the Blues last year. Now, Mauricio Pochettino's side could attempt to bring a former Gunner back to the Premier League. Chelsea have spent over £1billion on players under Todd Boehly.

Chelsea's mass injury crisis means Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino has named a bench against Tottenham with Cesare Casadei as the oldest outfield player at just 21-years-old. The Blues have named a bench that features 31-year-old goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli as the most senior player, but the majority of the outfield contingent are still in their teens, with only two stars over the age of 20.

Mauricio Pochettino faces such an injury crisis that his team has practically been picked for him. Meanwhile, Ange Postecoglou will need to wrestle his players from a stupor after back-to-back defeats, although their inspired second half in their 3-2 loss to Arsenal gives hope. There is a picture that stands out most from Tottenham's crushing 4-1 defeat to Chelsea last November. Pochettino's Spurs drew 2-2 at Stamford Bridge on May 2, 2016 - a night of unbridled enmity which ended with Leicester City being confirmed as the Premier League's 5,000-1 champions. The 52-year-old Argentine is aware that his history posed a problem for some supporters when he took over at Chelsea. Speaking on Wednesday, Pochettino insisted that whatever is spouted on social media is not mirrored in real life and that a connection is clearly growing.

Chelsea have the chance to take a big step towards securing European football for next season on Thursday while Tottenham want to get their top-four push back on track after losing to Arsenal. Chelsea host their biggest rivals at Stamford Bridge - a night game which will bring back memories of the 2016 Battle of the Bridge - but will do so without two key players after both were new additions on the treatment table this week.

With just a handful of games left of the campaign for Premier League clubs, some thoughts would have already turned to next season. Gallagher, 24, is set to enter his final year of his contract with the club he joined at the age of eight. Talks over extending his stay have been ongoing for several months, yet Chelsea insiders say the situation remains the same with five games of the Premier League season to go. Mauricio Pochettino wants his relentless runner to stay, though the manager himself is not sure how much input he will be allowed into the club's transfer business this summer. Previous windows were largely handled by sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart.

KIERAN GILL: Chelsea are not only losing a classy central defender in Thiago Silva. They are losing more prestige, more experience and more professionalism than you fear they can afford in the midst of what we may as well call 'Project Youth'. Silva, now 39, has confirmed he will leave when his contract expires at the end of this season. He could have departed in January when clubs in his homeland came calling but he stayed, having agreed to help Chelsea through to the summer. Silva insisted in his teary farewell that he will be back at Cobham someday, most likely in a coaching capacity. He started his UEFA B licence two months ago and manager Mauricio Pochettino has often trusted him to deliver speeches on his behalf. That included at half-time of Saturday's 2-2 draw at Aston Villa. Chelsea were trailing 2-0 at the time when Silva tried to stir his young team-mates into believing they could come back. It worked, as they went on to earn the least they deserved in a point.

MATT BARLOW: Solid, dependable, vocal. Organising and improving others around him. Also, reviving hopes of an England recall with his international career stuck on 49 caps. It is a classic from the redemption genre. Dier joined Bayern for £3.4million on deadline day, initially on a short-term deal until the end of the season when his Tottenham contract was set to expire but quickly reached the preset clause for appearances to trigger another year in Munich. Steffen Freund, a Spurs icon working as a co-commentator for RTL Germany, Servus TV Austria and international Bundesliga coverage, was among the minority who thought he would be a hit in the Bundesliga.

KIERAN GILL: Thiago Silva will leave Chelsea when his contract expires at the end of the season but has said he is interested in returning in the future, potentially in a coaching capacity. The 39-year-old Brazilian joined the club on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in 2020 and has remained a vital member of the squad throughout his four years, starting in their 2-2 draw with Aston Villa on Saturday. Silva picked up a groin problem in that comeback at Villa Park, raising the possibility that it was his last appearance in the blue shirt.

KIERAN GILL: It might have been a foul. It might not have been. What we do know is referee Craig Pawson had a perfect view in real time. He was 10 yards from it, unobstructed, and originally gave Chelsea the goal which would have completed a terrific turnaround after finding themselves 2-0 down at half-time. PGMOL head Howard Webb forever insists he does not want VAR to 're-referee' games - it is supposed to be reserved for howlers only - but that was exactly what happened here. Chris Kavanagh told Pawson he had clearly and obviously not seen the foul which, just seconds earlier, he had been staring straight at.

The last time Harry Kane reached this stage of the Champions League he was injured and unable to contribute in the usual way. With Tottenham trailing 3-0 on aggregate at Ajax, Kane made his way down from his seat in the stands to the dressing room to deliver a half-time pep talk. Whether the inspiration came from him or boss Mauricio Pochettino, who also spoke, or neither of them, Lucas Moura responded with a hat trick. Spurs went into the final in Madrid and Kane, after two months out, declared himself fit. Moura went back to the bench. Liverpool won 2-0. Heartbreak for Tottenham who did not expect to win the Champions League but were beginning to wonder if their name was on the cup. It wasn't. It rarely is these days. Five years on, Kane is still waits for the major trophy nobody will begrudge him after a decade of pure excellence.

The 39-year-old is in the final few months of his contract at Chelsea and much speculation has revolved around whether their star centre back will leave the club this summer. Silva went down holding his groin and came off just before the 90th minute of Chelsea's eventful clash at Villa Park on Saturday night. Pochettino said: 'We need to assess him after tomorrow. It is a pain in his groin, which was similar to [Crystal] Palace.'

Mauricio Pochettino reacted with five words after Chelsea had a late goal controversially ruled out against Aston Villa.  The Blues fell behind to a Marc Cucurella's early own-goal and Morgan Rogers' strike just before the break.  But they fought back strongly and were rewarded when Noni Madueke and Conor Gallagher drew the game level. 

KIERAN GILL AT VILLA PARK: There were fans with flares outside of Villa Park's Trinity Road Stand turning the air claret and blue as the team coaches arrived. 'On our way, on our way, to the Champions League, we're on our way,' they slurred after a thirsty Saturday build-up.

KIERAN GILL: The visitors had battled back from 2-0 down at half-time and were celebrating wildly when they thought Axel Disasi had secured a stoppage-time winner. Yet VAR spotted a nudge in the back of Diego Carlos by Benoit Badiashile in the build-up and that was enough for referee Craig Pawson to disallow the goal as Champions League-chasing Villa avoided defeat.
