Maureen Paula O'Sullivan (17 May 1911 – June 1998), an Irish-American actress best known for her role as Jane in the Tarzan series of films starring Johnny Weissmuller.

Early life

In 1911, O'Sullivan, the daughter of Mary Eva Lovatt (née Frazer) and Charles Joseph O'Sullivan, a member of the Connaught Rangers who served in World War I, was born in Boyle, County Roscommon, Ireland. Mauguan was honoured by the town in 1988. She went to a convent school in Dublin and then the Convent of the Sacred Heart at Roehampton (now Woldingham School), England. Vivian Mary Hartley, a future Academy Award-winning actress Vivien Leigh, was one of her classmates. O'Sullivan returned to Dublin to work with the homeless after attending finishing school in France. On the way to Hollywood, she and her mother, RMS Baltic, sailed to New York in October 1929, accompanied by the Fox Film Corporation.

Personal life

From 12 September 1936 to his death on January 28, 1963, O'Sullivan's first husband, an Australian-American writer, award-winning director, and Catholic convert John Villiers Farrow was O'Sullivan's first husband. On August 22, 1983, O'Sullivan married James Cushing, a wealthy businessman, and the pair remained married until her death in 1998. In Los Angeles, California, she became a United States citizen on October 22, 1947 (Petition for Naturalization #33033333).

O'Sullivan, a Catholic, was a Jesuit. She voted for Adlai Stevenson during the 1952 presidential election.

Film career

O'Sullivan's film career began when she encountered motion picture director Frank Borzage, who was filming on Song o' My Heart (1930) for twentieth Century Fox. He suggested that she do a screen test. She did and won a role in the film, which starred Irish tenor John McCormack. She travelled to Hollywood to finish the film. She appeared in six films at Fox, and then made three more at other studios.

She joined Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1932. She was selected by Irving Thalberg to appear as Jane Parker in Tarzan the Ape Man, with costar Johnny Weissmuller, after many appearances in various studios and film sets. She appeared in a number of other film productions with various actors during MGM's 1930s and 1940s. Jane was a fictional actress who appeared in six Tarzan films between 1932 and 1942.

She appeared in The Thin Man (1934) with William Powell and Myrna Loy, and she appeared in Anna Karenina (1935) with Greta Garbo, Fredric March, and Basil Rathbone. Molly Beaumont in A Day at the Races (1937), written partially by F. Scott Fitzgerald, she appeared in A Day at the Races (1937).

She appeared in Pride and Prejudice (1940) with Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson, as well as supporting Ann Sothern in Maisie Was a Lady (1941). O'Sullivan, a star of Tarzan's New York Adventure (1942), begged MGM to remove her from her service so she could care for her husband, John Farrow, who had just left the Navy with typhoid. She resigned from show business, devoting her time to her family. She appeared on camera in The Big Clock, directed by her husband for In 1948, she appeared on The Big Clock, a British show. She continued to appear in her husband's films and television occasionally.

Michael Farrow, the eldest son of John Farrow and Maulan O'Sullivan, died in a plane crash in California in 1958.

O'Sullivan thought she had permanently retired by 1960. However, actress Pat O'Brien encouraged her to participate in summer stock, and the play A Roomful of Roses opened in 1961. It culminated in her Broadway debut with costar Paul Ford in Never Too Late. Farrow died as a result of a heart attack shortly after it began.

After Farrow's death, O'Sullivan continued acting as a Today Girl for a while before appearing on NBC's Today Girl (1965) for Warner Bros.

O'Sullivan appeared in the Elitch Theatre performance of Butterflies Are Free with Karen Grassle and Brandon deWilde between June and July 1972. On July 1, 1972, the exhibit came to an end.

Mia Farrow, a mother of Farrow's daughter, became involved with Woody Allen both professionally and romantically, appearing in Allen's Hannah and Her Sisters as Farrow's mother. Peggy Sue Got Married (1986) and Stranded (1987) were both actresses. In 1994, she appeared with Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers in Hart to Hart: Where the Hart Is, a documentary about the wealthy husband-and-wife team from the popular weekly detective series Hart to Hart.
