Career
In 1993, Ekström made his first appearance in karting. He appeared in the Renault 5 Turbo Cup for the next two years, winning the championship in 1996. In 1997, the driver qualified to the Swedish Touring Car Championship, finishing runner-up with a Volvo 850. He rode a Ford Mondeo in 1998, winning four podiums. Ekström rode a 1999 championship in an Audi A4 quattro. In 2000, he rode again, finishing third with a Volvo S40.
Ekström was a member of the Abt Junior team in 2001 to compete at the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters. He finished 8th in his debut season, third in 2002, and fourth in 2003.
Ekström won the 2004 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, defeating Mercedes rivals Gary Paffett and Christijan Albers. In the 2005 DTM season, he came in second, behind Paffett.
In addition, Ekström has been involved in rallying and the World Rally Championship. He debuted in the WRC in 1999 and achieved his best result at the 2005 Swedish Rally, finishing tenth in a koda factory team Fabia WRC. Ekström took the Nations' Cup with Tom Kristensen at the 2005 Race of Champions. In 2006, he won the Henri Toivonen Memorial Trophy and was named Champion of Champions at the 2006 Race of Champions by defeating Sébastien Loeb in the individual event finals.
Ekström won his second DTM title in 2007 and went on to win the 2007 Race of Champions, defeating Michael Schumacher in the individual finals after a disappointing 2005 season. He won the Race of Champions in 2009 once more overtaking the seven-time world champion in the final.
In June 2010, Ekström became the first Scandinavian driver to compete in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Infineon Raceway, he competed for Team Red Bull, swapping for Brian Vickers in the No. 88. 83 Toyota Camry, as Vickers was inactive for the remainder of the 2010 season due to blood clots. Ekström was able to finish 21st and lead 7 laps in a majority of the top 5 or top ten all day. However, he did so ex-aequo with another Scandinavian driver, Jan Magnussen from Denmark, who eventually finished the race ahead of Ekström. Ekström also competed in the Air Guard 400 at Richmond International Raceway, finishing 31st and 42nd.
In 2013, Ekström continued his footsteps in Bengt's career by branching out into rallycross, finishing second in a Volkswagen Polo in Höljes, Sweden. He then revealed that he was establishing his own EKS RX team to compete in the FIA World Rallycross Championship. The team made their World Rally Championship debut in Hell in the Norwegian round of the 2014 World Rally Championship season, fielding two Audi S1s for Ekström and 2013 Junior World Rally Champion Pontus Tidemand.
Ekström is widely regarded as one of the world's most adaptable engines. He was also in the Bathurst 1000 in 2013 with Andy Priaulx in a 'wildcard' entry. The entry placed 19th and ended 10th, with former 1000 champion and commentator Mark Skaife lauding his efforts, as well as being "the best international driver since Jacky Ickx." On his debut with Allan Moffat in 1977, Ickx captured the race on his debut with Allan Moffat.
In January 2018, Ekström announced that he would no longer be involved in DTM and instead concentrate on his rallycross team, which would now have Audi Sport's help. However, Audi decided to withdrew its employment program, leaving Ekström's team in jeopardy, while others' Audi S1s were sold to the privateers at the end of the season. After signing Krisztián Szabó from Hungary, the team remained a one-car privateer, with Ekström's wildcard entry at the inaugural World Rallycross event in Spa Francochamps.
Ekström is back in the World Rallycross Championship in 2020, starting as a wildcard for the first two rounds in Sweden for the JC Race Teknik team, which is also running two Audi S1's. He made a trade a few months with the Latvian Jnis Baumanis, who was unable to complete the team due to budget difficulties exacerbated by COVID-19 pandemic. Ekström stayed with the team for another two double-header rounds in Finland and Latvia, where he earned two victories and five podiums out of six tournaments so far, making him the champion and co-champion partner together with fellow Swede Johan Kristoffersson.
