He appeared in four Tests and fourteen ODIs for England. Maynard was a batsman (and later in his career, a wicketkeeper) known for his aggressive and slashing strokeplay.
His first-class career with Glamorgan saw him finish with a batting average of 42.53, take 372 catches, and make seven stumpings with the gloves, but he was never able to translate his county form into Test success.
In 1998, he was named Wisden Cricketer of the Year.
Life and career
Maynard, a boy from Oldham, Lancashire, was born on the island of Anglesey in North Wales, where he first joined Glamorgan. His career began in fine style on his debut in 1985, scoring three straight sixes to reach the 100 and becoming the country's youngest player to reach 1,000 runs in 1986. The 54 centuries he scored for Glamorgan during his playing career is also a record - the most any player has scored for the team. These demonstrations of intelligence went unnoticed by England's pickors, and he received a call-up against the West Indies at the Oval in 1988. He was selected again in 1989 but then fell foul of the cricketing authorities by promising to work with Mike Gatting on the controversial rebel tour of South Africa, after the country had been barred from international sport due to the country's anti-immigration laws. He later justified his decision by saying he was desperate for a glimpse of international cricket after being barred from the England team. Nevertheless, his conduct resulted in a three-year Test suspension, but he was eventually granted a recall for the Ashes series in 1993 after he had turned up his years for Glamorgan against the Australians, but the bat had no impact with the game. He was also a member of the England squad that defeated the Hong Kong Sixes in 1994.
Maynard captained Glamorgan for five seasons between 1995 and 2000, bringing them right back to domestic cricket. His role as captain included helping them win the County Championship in 1997 and their first appearance since 1977 in a cup final at Lord's in 2000. He was granted one last call back to the England team in the same year, but only managed scores of 3 and 0 in his last international appearance as a player.
In September 2004, he was promoted as assistant coach to the England cricket team and then announced his resignation as a player immediately after, realizing he no longer enjoys batting. He caused some controversy in his brief time as an international coach. Ex England captain Mike Atherton chastised his appointment, saying that the position should not have been transferred to someone who had been on the rebel tour of South Africa. Former cricketer Keith Fletcher, who accused him of being too keen on alcohol consumption and partying, condemned his behaviour to serve as a role model for young international cricketers, took it off. He struck back at Fletcher, wrangling his leadership abilities. Maynard continued to assist him in writing an England team song and at one point was drafted in professional lyricists to assist him in composing an England squad song.
Maynard was appointed England assistant coach by Andy Flower after Duncan Fletcher's resigning after the 2007 Cricket World Cup. Maynard said he had been offered a job with the Indian cricket academy in a tweeting interview following the announcement.
He served with the Nashua Titans, one of South Africa's six national cricket franchises. He has had a fruitful first season (Supersport Series) as well as the national T20 competition (MiWay T20 Challenge).
Maynard was appointed Director of Cricket at Somerset County Cricket Club at the end of the 2014 season, following the departure of David Nosworthy. Maynard left his position as Somerset's head coach after three seasons at the club after the 2017 season ended.
In the 2019 New Year Honours, he was given the MBE.
Tom was discovered dead on June 18, 2012.
