Matt Millen Life

Matthew George Millen (born March 12, 1958) is a former American football linebacker and executive.

Millen spent time with the Oakland Raiders, San Francisco 49ers, and the Washington Redskins of the National Football League, and over his 12-year NFL playing career, he appeared on four Super Bowl-winning teams.

Millen also earned a Super Bowl ring with each of the three franchises for which he played; moreover, he won a Super Bowl ring in each of the four cities in which he played (the Oakland Lions won championships in both Oakland and Los Angeles during his playing career).

His eight-year tenure as the franchise's head coach was the worst eight-year record in the modern NFL (31-84, a.270 winning percentage), resulting in his resignation on September 24, 2008.

Millen assembled the 2008 Lions' staff and coaching staff, making them the first team to go 0-16.

This was the sole worst single-season record in league history before the 2017 Cleveland Browns tied it.

He is widely regarded as one of the worst general managers in modern sports. Following his NFL career, he worked as a football analyst on several national television and radio networks.

His last work before joining the Lions was as a member of the number two broadcast team for NFL on Fox, as well as being the color commentator for Monday Night Football on Westwood One.

He joined the NBC television team for pre-game coverage of Super Bowl XLIII on February 1, 2009.

He has also worked with ESPN as an NFL and college football analyst, as well as as on NFL Network as a color commentator on Thursday Night Football.

Millen returned to Fox Football in 2015 and debuted on Big Ten Network.

Early life and education

Millen was born and grew up in the Hokendauqua section of Whitehall Township, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Allentown, Pennsylvania. He attended Whitehall High School in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania. Millen was a standout football player for the school at the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, a prestigious high school athletic conference with a tradition of producing a large number of National Football League and other elite athletes.

Millen's Whitehall football jersey number (#83) was retired in perpetuity in honor of his high school, collegiate, and NFL football achievements, making him one of only three Whitehall High School football players, as well as fellow Whitehall High School alumni and NFL stars Saquon Barkley (#211) and Dan Koppen (#77), who are among the only three Whitehall High School football players with their Whitehall jersey numbers permanently retired in the school's history.

Millen was inducted into the Lehigh Valley Sports Hall of Fame in April 2022.

Personal life

Millen is married to Patricia Millen. They have four children and ten grandchildren.

In 2017, Millen was diagnosed with rare disease amyloidosis. The disease in Millen's case affected his heart, limiting it to 30 percent capacity. Millen was told he needed a heart transplant to continue living. He started chemotherapy to remove the amyloidosis from his body as he waited for one. On Christmas Eve 2018, Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, New Jersey, underwent transplant surgery.

Matt Millen Career

College career

Millen was drafted from Whitehall High School by Penn State, where he became an All-American defensive tackle for the Nittany Lions.

NFL career

Millen made his NFL debut in 1979 and was selected by the Oakland Raiders with the draft's 43rd overall pick in the second round.

Millen played for the San Francisco 49ers and the Washington Redskins during his 12-year NFL career. Each of these teams has won a Super Bowl, including two with the Oakland Raiders (one when the team was based in Oakland and another in Los Angeles). He won one Super Bowl with the 49ers and Redskins, but while with the Redskins, he was deactivated for Super Bowl XXVI.

He was selected to play in one Pro Bowl at one time during his NFL career (in 1988). Millen finished his 12 NFL seasons with 11 sacks and nine interceptions, including one that returned for 132 yards and eight interceptions, as well as eight fumble recoveries. He has also punched 7 kickoffs for 72 yards. Tackles were not known at the time at that moment.

Television and radio career

Millen spent his time as a color commentator on CBS TV (which teamed him with Sean McDonough, Paul Olden, Mike Emrick, and Tim Ryan) and Fox (which teamed him with Dick Stockton). He also provided game analysis for Monday Night Football's radio broadcasts, as well as working with Howard David on CBS's Westwood One radio network.

Millen had been named the nation's number two analyst for its nationally broadcast games, behind John Madden (who had been teaming with Pat Summerall for years). Madden and Summerall were together on the 1997 American Bowl game because John Madden had apprehensions of flying.

Millen returned to broadcasting as a studio analyst for NBC's coverage of Wild Card Saturday, his first television appearance in an analyst role since the 2000 NFC Divisional Playoffs, and NBC retold that role in NBC's coverage of Super Bowl XLIII.

Millen was named as the lead analyst for the NFL Network's Thursday Night Football telecast on June 15, 2009, replacing Cris Collinsworth. He served as a color analyst on ESPN College Football telecasts, assassinating Sean McDonough and Holly Rowe.
