Career

He aspired to be a singer as a youth but decided against acting, making his debut in high school while still in high school. Jnanai no Gyakush (1996), his first film was 1960s Jnanasai no Gyakush (B) for Tei, where his father grew up to. In jidaigeki and yakuza films, he was specialized in romantic leads. But he soon switched to modern yakuza for films like Bakuto (1964) and Showa Zankyoden (1965), as well as Kinji Fukasaku's Blackmail Is My Life (1968).

In 1969, he returned to Daiei as a replacement for the recently deceased Raizo Ichikawa, appearing in nine films, including two in the Nemuri Kyshir series and Mission: Iron Castle, the final entry in the Shinobi no Mono series. After returning to Tei, he would appear in many more films by Fukasaku over the next decade, including three installments in the Battles Without Honor and Humanity series "Robert (1977), The Fall of Ako Castle (1978). In the first four and the last four, Bunta Sugawara appeared alongside Sonny Chiba.

He appeared in both the original 1984 Shura no Mure and the 2002 remake. In addition,, he has appeared in numerous V-Cinema films, including "Toei's "last yakuza film," The Man Who Shot the Don (1994). He appeared on Takeshi Kitano's Genki Ga Deru TV comedy show in the 1990s.

His television credits include edo S.am (1979 to 1984), the lead role in Meibugy's T'san (1988-1990), and one of the central characters in Hotel edo Sam (1988–1998). In the 1994 TBS Daichura, he appeared in ishi Kuranosuke.' Matsukata also appeared in Agatha Christie's Great Detectives Poirot and Marple as a guest voice actor.

On February 23, 2016, Matsukata was hospitalized for a possible brain tumor. He also cancelled several comedy appearances. Matsukata had been diagnosed with brain lymphoma on March 2, according to the company. Hiroki Matsukata died of a lymphoma complication at 11:26 a.m. on January 21, 2017.
