Matia Chowdhury Life

Matia Chowdhury (born 30 June 1942) is a Bangladeshi politician and the incumbent Member of Parliament from Sherpur-2.

She is a presidium member of Bangladesh Awami League and served as the Minister of Agriculture under Sheikh Hasina's prime ministership.

She served in office twice before from 1996 to 2001, 2009, and 2013 during the previous tenures of Awami League.

Early and education

Chowdhury was born on June 30th, 1942, in the village of Pirojpur District, and the Chowdhury family was born. Mohiuddin Ahmed Chowdhury, her father, was a police officer. She obtained her HSC from Dhaka Eden College. She later graduated from the University of Dhaka.

Personal life

Chowdhury was married to Bazlur Rahman, editor of The Sangbad, one of the oldest Bengali-language dailies still in use, who died on February 26, 2008.

Political career

Chowdhury began her political career early in her student years. She was instrumental in the resistance against the Ayub regime and the campaign against the Education Commission of 1962. She was elected Vice President of Dhaka Eden Girls College Students' Union in 1963 and then General Secretary of the Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) in 1964–65. Chowdhury is well-known in South Asia for her fiery speeches and her adamant demeanor, which have earned her the title Ogni Konna or Girl of Fire. Despite starting her political career with the left-wing National Awami Party, she is now one of the Awami League's most influential figures. She was president of the then East Pakistan Students' Union, 1965-66. She was an anti Ayub militant campaign from 1967 to 1969, and then she was arrested in jail for about two years. During the mass uprising of 1969, she was released from jail.
