Mary McGarry Morris (born February 10, 1943) is an American novelist, short story writer, and playwright from New England.

Her works are based on the towns of the area.

Michiko Kakutani of The New York Times named Morris as "one of America's most inventive new writers" in 1991; The Washington Post has dubbed her "one of the most popular new writers"; and The Miami Herald has named her as "one of our top American writers"; she has been compared to John Steinbeck and Carson McCullers.

Morris' writing style may have differed, but she has also been compared to William Faulkner for her character-driven storytelling.

She was a finalist for the National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction.

Morris has published eight books, some of which were best-sellers, as well as several short stories in 2011.

She has also written a play about Mary Todd Lincoln's insanity conviction.
