Marty Wilde Career

Career

Wilde was born in Blackheath, London. When Reg Patterson was spotted by impresario Larry Parnes, he was playing under the name Reg Patterson at London's Condor Club in 1957. Parnes gave his protégés stage names such as Billy Fury, Duffy Power, and Dickie Pride, which led to the change to Wilde. The 'Marty' came from the illustrious 1955 film of the same name. Wilde was signed to Philips Records' British recording arm, with US releases appearing on the Epic label as a result of Philips' reciprocal licensing agreement with Columbia Records stateside. (Philips had yet to purchase the Mercury group as part of its US division).

Wilde, along with Tommy Steele and Cliff Richard, were one of Britain's top rock-and-roll singers from mid-1958 to 1959. The Wildcats, Wilde's backing group, were known as the Wildcats in the United States. Big Jim Sullivan on lead guitar, Tony Belcher on rhythm guitar, Bobby Graham or Bobbie Clarke on drums, plus Brian Locking on bass guitar and Brian Bennett on drums, all of whom later joined the Shadows.

He appeared on BBC Television Show 6.5 Special and was the main regular artiste on the Saturday ITV classic music show Oh Boy! Boy Meets Girls, or Boy Meets Girls. Joyce Baker, one of the Vernon Girls who were also show regulars, was there. Their courtship was announced in public, but after their marriage Wilde's fame as a teen idol faded, they were courted out.

He converted to all-round entertainment, appearing in musicals like Conrad Birdie and several films in the original West End production of Bye Bye Birdie and several others. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, he found success as a songwriter. He co-wrote the one-hit wonders of the Casuals' "Jesamine" under Frere Manston and Jack Gellar's pseudonyms. The pair also wrote "I'm a Tiger" in Lulu, and "Ice in the Sun" in early Status Quo.

He also tried to tap into the burgeoning glam rock boom by releasing the single "Rock'n'Roll Crazy" / "Right On!" Zappo, The Dazzling All Night Rock Show ("20 Fantastic Bands"), and Ruby Pearl and The Dreamboats ("The Shang-A-Lang Song") are among the many bands on display. None of the launches were a commercial success, and Wilde left the glam rock genre behind him and moved to work with his son, Ricky Wilde.

Wilde, like many of his contemporaries, has continued to appear on nostalgia tours in the United Kingdom and elsewhere. He celebrated 50 years in the industry in 2007 with another tour that featured his youngest daughter Roxanne Wilde, as well as the release of Born To Rock And Roll – The Greatest Hits. It featured a duet with Kim Wilde of Elton John's "Sorry Seems to Be the Greatest Word," which was released as a promotional only single.

Wilde, Mark Wynter, and Mike Berry appeared on The Solid Gold Rock'n'Roll Show in the United Kingdom in 2017, which also included Eden Kane, Mark Wynter, and Mike Berry.

Charlie Gracie and Mike Berry, an American artist, toured the UK once more in 2019. Due to the Covid-19 health issues, the planned 2020 tour has been postponed to 2021.

Wilde, who appeared on Running Together on October 9, 2020, reached number 75 in the UK Albums Chart. Kim and Roxanne Wilde, with son Ricky's input, were included on his own Pushka brand, and it included his children Kim and Roxanne Wilde. Wilde has earned the distinction of being a performer or songwriter for eight decades, which has earned him the distinction of being the UK chart champ for eight decades.
