Mart Poom Career

Club career

Poom joined Tallinn as a child (English: Lions of Tallinn), before moving to Sport Tallinn in 1989.

Poom joined Finnish Veikkausliiga club KuPS in 1992. He appeared in only 9 games in Finland before returning to Estonia.

Poom and Poom returned to Estonia, as the successor to the Lvid team, Flora, has signed for Meistriliiga club Flora.

Poom left Flora on August 1 and joined Nationalliga B side Wil for a reported transfer fee of £128,000.

Poom signed for Portsmouth's First Division side Portsmouth on August 4, 1994, for a reported transfer fee of £170,000. He made four appearances for Portsmouth in the league.

Poom started on loan with Flora in 1995, where he set the club record by keeping a clean sheet for 756 minutes.

Following a good showing for Estonia (a 0–0 draw against Scotland in a rearranged match played in Monaco), Poom joined Derby County for a reported transfer fee of £595,000 on March 26, 1997. In Derby's 3–2 away victory over Old Trafford on 5 April 1997, he made his Premier League debut, becoming the first Estonian to play in the PL. Poom soon became a fan favorite, with supporters often confusing unfamiliar commentators with a low chant of 'Pooooom' before games, which sounded like booing. In the 1999–2000 season and in 2022, Poom was voted Derby County Player of the Year, and he was named the best footballer of the 2000s decade by Derby County.

Poom joined Sunderland on loan after Derby County's relegation to the First Division in the 2001–02 season. On January 10, 2003, the transfer was made permanent for a fee of £3.19 million. He scored a 90th-minute equalizer for Sunderland against Derby County at Pride Park on September 20, 2003. By the commentator, this was billed as "the best goal ever scored by a goalkeeper in the 90th minute of his first match against his former club." Both groups of supporters applauded the goal. Poom's career in Sunderland was marred by several injuries, and he was forced to spend much of the 2004–05 season on the sidelines, making 11 appearances as Sunderland claimed the 2004–05 Football League Championships.

Poom was officially signed by Arsenal on loan as interim cover for Jens Lehmann and Manuel Almunia on August 31, 2005. On January 23, 2006, the move was made permanent. He was Arsenal's third-choice keeper and did not appear in single game in the 2005–06 season. However, after Arsenal lost to Barcelona in the 2006 UEFA Champions League Final, he became the first Estonian to win a Champions League runners-up award. Poom did not participate nor did he make the substitute's bench for the final, but he was part of Arsenal's 25-man European squad, each of whom earned a silver medal.

He made his Arsenal debut against Everton on November 8, 2006, defeating Manuel Almunia at halftime in a League Cup match against Everton. Arsenal defeated the game 1–0 thanks to a Emmanuel Adebayor goal. In a 0–0 draw, his first and only appearance for Arsenal in the Premier League came on the last day of the 2006–07 season against his former club, Portsmouth.

Poom relegated from the Premier League from the Premier League on May 26 for Watford, who had recently been suspended from the Premier League for an undisclosed fee. He started the new season as Watford's first choice, but he later lost his position to Richard Lee.

Poom returned to the side for the 2008-09 season, but he suffered a dislocated shoulder in a match against Reading on September 20th, putting him out for the majority of the season. Despite returning to training before the season ended, he was not selected for the first-team squad and was suspended from his service, which was set to end in June.

International career

In a historic 1–1 friendly draw against Slovenia on June 3, Poom made his international debut for the Estonian national team on June 3rd. The match was Estonia's first official match since the country's independence was restored, as well as Slovenia's first match ever. The Estonian Football Association named Poom Estonia's Top Player of the Last 50 Years in November 2003. After a 0–0 friendly draw against Portugal in Tallinn, Poom's international career came to an end. In 31 games, he made 120 appearances while keeping a clean sheet.
