Early life
Martin was born in Plano, Texas, to African-American parents Carol and Joshua Martin. Martin's acting career started after a glamour pictorial. The photographer gave them a discount in exchange for her father's promise that he would submit the photos to talent agencies. The photos were sent out to four agencies and one immediately signed her. At age five, she landed her first national commercial for Choice Hotel. Her family then moved to Los Angeles in 2013, so she could pursue an acting career.
Career
On the ABC sitcom Black-ish, which was created by Kenya Barris, Martin was cast as Diane Johnson, the daughter of Andre (Anthony Anderson) and Rainbow Johnson (Tracee Ellis Ross). Martin has been nominated and recognized for her debut in television, including three NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and a Young Artist Award. She has been nominated for six NAACP Image Awards and two Screen Actor Guild Awards for Outstanding Achievement by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
Martin made her film debut in 2016, starring Melody 1963: Love Has to Win, which was set in Detroit during the Civil Rights Movement. She appeared in the film Nina, which tells the life story of American artist and feminist Nina Simone. Martin appeared in her first studio feature film, The Comedian, for Universal Pictures in 2019. At the age of 13, she became the film's executive producer and youngest African-American producer.
Genius Productions, Martin's company, has signed a first-look production contract with Universal in February 2019. StepMonster, Martin's first film as part of the alliance, is a film about a teen girl who is adjusting to life with a new stepmother. She is Universal's youngest person to secure a first-look contract and the youngest person to work at a studio. Martin would be producing and appearing in Universal Pictures' film adaptation of Amari and the Night Brothers, which was announced in May 2019. Martin would produce the comedy film Queen in December 2019. In the 2021 film PAW Patrol: The Movie, she portrayed Liberty. Martin would appear alongside Kelly Rowland and Omari Hardwick in the forthcoming film Fantasy Football in April 2022.
