CHRIS WHEELER: Manchester United's atmosphere has shifted from one of sadness to a soaring sense of hope after four victories in a row. Erik ten Hag's team has won rousing victories over Liverpool and league leaders Arsenal in the Premier League, taking them away from the bottom of the table and into fifth place in two games at Old Trafford.

On Friday, the 22-year-old completed his £60 million move from Real Sociedad to St James' Park, paying the Magpies a club-record fee. According to Mundo Deportivo, it has been reported that he could have migrated to United instead, but his supporters advised that he turned down their advances. In his first transfer window in the dugout, Erik ten Hag has been able to recruit five new signings, including Ajax duo Antony and Lisandro Martinez, as well as serial Champions League champion Casemiro. Despite deciding against a blockbuster transfer to Old Trafford, Manchester United's impending £60 million signing Casemiro was seen training with Real Madrid ahead of their LaLiga match against Celta Vigo on Saturday. After alerting Carlo Ancelotti of his decision to join Erik ten Hag's side earlier this week, the Brazilian defensive midfielder is set to sign a four-year deal with the possibility of a further year. Casemiro's medical was initially scheduled for this weekend, according to sportsmail, but his appearance at training shows that the 30-year-old may also be needed at the Bernabeu, at least in the short run.

Ten Hag had previously requested that the budget for a second-choice keeper be increased from £1million to £7 million, with veteran goal Tom Heaton the only alternative between the sticks in the case of De Gea's injury. Begovic will have a Premier League title as well as more than 250 Premier League appearances, but he will most likely only have temporary cover as a No. 2 until a younger alternative can be found. Ten Hag is keen to bring in a competent second choice keeper with the ability to push and compete with his Spanish shot stopper, which has resulted in the increase in available funds.
