Earlier this week, ITV confirmed that the 78-year-old will return for one final season, which will be filmed in Northumberland this summer. Since Vera began in 2011, the show has starred several industry heavyweights - including the late Paul Ritter, Notting Hill's Gina McKee and Catastrophe star Mark Bonnar. However, the series also helped to launch the careers of some of the UK's biggest actors, such as Kingsley Ben-Adir (centre left) and Cush Jumbo (centre right). Here FEMAIL takes a look back at the stars (and musician Sam Feder, left) who owe their careers to the crime drama. Right: Vera actor David Leon, who played DS Joe Ashworth.

CHRISTOPHER STEVENS writes about the Russian agent who defied Putin's tyranny in the night of last night's television

www.dailymail.co.uk, June 19, 2023
What a strange accent. Those sounds seemed unlikely from the well-known person's. In Litvinenko (ITV1), not David Tennant's guttural Russian vowels, but Mark Bonnar's booming Cockney, inevitably a man with the most familiar Edinburgh brogue since Maggie Smith in The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie. Bonnar did it for the most part, but the effect of seeing him do undiluted London was similar to that of a soprano opening her mouth and singing Ol' Man River, basso profundo. So far, we've seen little of him as the head of counterterrorism, though we do expect him to play a more central role in the second episode.

A cartoonish caper with the gleeful violence of classic Looney Tunes

CHRISTOPHER STEVENS: Manipulative Max, the criminal prosecutor played with aplomb by Mark Bonnar (left) in Guilt, is starting to remind me of Wile E. Coyote. He was tricked, tripped, flattened, turned inside-out, and faced with a certain death so many times that he could barely bear a shrug of surprise. I felt a tigerish glee at the brutality that would surely follow as he and his gullible brother Jake (Jamie Sives, right) were shoved through an airport doorway expecting to see a taxi rank but instead found themselves surrounded by thugs. Max had pelt off a cliff and was suspended in empty space, waiting for gravity to catch up with him.

CHRISTOPHER STEVENS on last night's TV

CHRISTOPHER STEVENS: Unlike the amateur contestants on the main series, the majority of the Celebrity MasterChef (BBC1) line-up doesn't know one end of a blender from the other. We're supposed to believe that the celebs who make aprons spend all their free time in the kitchen. The truth is that some of them will not know how to open a Pret pre-packaged sandwich. They'd have to hire their personal assistants to do it.
