Mario Manningham Life

Mario Cashmere Manningham (born May 25, 1986) is a former American football wide receiver.

He was drafted by the New York Giants in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft.

After receiving few opportunities in his rookie year, Manningham caught 18 touchdown passes the following three seasons, as well as three postseason touchdowns during the Giants' 2011-12 playoff run.

Manningham won Super Bowl XLVI with the Giants against the New England Patriots, in which he caught a crucial 38-yard pass with under four minutes remaining to set up the Giants' game-winning drive, a famous play in Super Bowl lore.

Manningham later signed with the San Francisco 49ers and played two seasons with the team.

He re-signed with the Giants on March 18, 2014.

He played college football at Michigan.

College career

Manningham, a freshman, had 27 receptions for 433 yards and six touchdowns, with the game-winning catch in the game against Penn State, bringing the Nittany Lions their first loss of the season.

Manningham finished 2006 with a total of 38 receptions, 703 yards, and nine touchdowns. He was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for the second week in a row, first against Notre Dame and then against Wisconsin. Manningham hurt his kneecap and underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on October 10. Manningham made his first game appearance after suffering the injury as a reserve wide receiver against Ball State on November 4th.

In 2007, Manningham had 72 receptions for 1,174 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Manningham decided against returning to school for his senior year in 2008 and joined the NFL Draft after the 2007 season. He had 137 receptions for 2,310 yards and 27 touchdowns during his Michigan career. According to those statistics, he came in ninth, fifth, and fourth in school history.

Professional career

Manningham had been banned from "multiple teams" draft boards due to allegations of marijuana use in college. At first, Mario denied testing positive, but he then sent a letter to all 32 clubs claiming he lied. Manningham claims he failed two drug tests at Michigan. Manningham received a 6 out of 50 on the Wonderlic exam, according to Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's Bob McGinn. His draft value dropped due to this and other issues.

Manningham was drafted in the third round (95th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. Manningham said he was looking forward to playing with fellow Michigan Wolverine Amani Toomer during rookie training camp. Manningham has agreed to a four-year contract worth up to $2.3 million. Manningham played in his first appearance against the Seattle Seahawks on October 5, 2008. The Giants won by a score of 44–6.

Manningham competed for the punt returner job in 2009 after working on his punt return skills.

Manningham started the 2009 season by throwing three passes for 58 yards and a touchdown en route to the Giants' 23-17 victory over the Washington Redskins. In the Giants' 33–31 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, he followed this up by catching 10 passes for 150 yards and a juggling sliding catch for a touchdown.

After fellow receiver Domenik Hixon was injured in a Week 2 game against the Dallas Cowboys, Manningham was the starting wide receiver opposite Steve Smith.

Manningham appeared in all 16 games of the Giants' 2010–6 season, including Manningham. In Week 15, he had eight receptions for 113 yards and two touchdowns against the Philadelphia Eagles, defeating him 38–31. In a 45-17 loss to the Green Bay Packers, he continued up with four receptions for 132 yards and a touchdown. In the Giants' last game of the 2010 regular season, he had four receptions for 101 yards and a touchdown. He had 60 receptions for 944 yards and nine touchdowns on the season.

Manningham made 39 receptions for 523 yards and four touchdowns in the 2011 regular season. He scored a touchdown in three straight games in Weeks 8–10.

Manningham made a catch in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLVI on February 5, 2012, securing the victory over the New England Patriots. The Giants had to start the winning drive after trailing by two points with 3 minutes and 46 seconds remaining. Eli Manning soared down the left side of Manningham, completing his feet in bounds by an inch with two defenders around him for a gain of 38 yards. The Giants defeated the Patriots by a score of 21–17. Manningham led the game with 5 catches for 73 yards.

Manningham signed a two-year, $7.375 million contract with the San Francisco 49ers on March 22, 2012.

In the season opener against the Green Bay Packers on September 9, he made his 49ers debut. In the 30–22 victory, he had four receptions for 29 yards. In Week 5 against the Buffalo Bills, he scored his first touchdown as a 49er, a 10-yard pass from quarterback Alex Smith.

In a game the 49ers lost 42-13, he tore his ACL and PCL in his left knee against his division rival, the Seattle Seahawks. Manningham will be out for the season, according to the 49ers the next day. The 49ers made it to Super Bowl XLVII, but the Baltimore Ravens defeated the Baltimore Ravens 34–31.

Manningham was put on the reserve/physically inable to perform list on August 27, 2013. Manningham was activated by the 49ers on November 4, 2013, after recovering from the injury suffered against the Seahawks. Manningham was put on the injured reserve list on December 27, 2013, putting an end to his season after limited service. He finished the 2013 season with nine receptions for 85 yards.

Manningham signed a one-year deal with the New York Giants on March 18, 2014. After straining his calf in the last preseason game, the Giants announced him on injured reserve and then released him by the Giants.
