Marilyn Nelson Life

Marilyn Nelson (born April 26, 1946) is an American poet, translator, and children's book author.

She is a professor emeritus at the University of Connecticut and the former poet laureate of Connecticut. She is a recipient of the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, the NSK Neustadt Prize for Children's Literature, and the Frost Prize.

Marilyn Nelson Waniek appeared on television from 1978 to 1994.

She is the author or translator of more than twenty books and five chapbooks of poetry for adults and children.

Although the bulk of her writing revolves around historical subjects, she did publish How I Discovered Poetry in 2014, one of NPR's Best Books of 2014's Top Books.

Early life

Nelson was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 26, 1946, to Melvin M. Nelson, a United States serviceman in the Air Force, and Johnnie Mitchell Nelson, a teacher. She spent time on military bases and began writing in elementary school. She obtained a B.A. Dr. Andrew Davis, M.A., received her M.A. from the University of California-Davis. In 1970, he earned a doctorate from the University of Minnesota, and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1979.

Career

She is a professor emeritus of English at the University of Connecticut and the founder and director of Soul Mountain Retreat. She served as poet laureate of the state of Connecticut from 2001 to 2006.

The Homeplace (Louisiana State University Press), which received the 1992 Anisfield-Wolf Award and was a finalist for the 1997 National Book Award, and The Fields Of Praise (Louisiana State University Press), which received the 1991 National Book Award and was a finalist for the 1997 National Book Award. Two NEA creative writing fellowships, the 1990 Connecticut Arts Award, a Fulbright Teaching Fellowship, and a 2001 Guggenheim Fellowship have all been recognized. She spent a semester at the University of Sewanee, Tennessee, as a Brown Foundation Fellow. The Poetry Society of America gave her the Frost Medal in 2012. Nelson was elected chancellor of the Academy of American Poets in 2013.
