Early life and education
Born in Edmonton, Alberta, she grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and received a bachelor's degree in radio, television, and advertising from the University of Idaho.
Personal life
Denis lives in downtown Toronto. Marilyn revealed on May 8, 2018 that she had proposed Jim Helman, her high school prom date. They married on June 19, 2018.

Career
Marilyn began her radio career in Moscow, Idaho, and then moved to Calgary, where she worked for CHFM & CJAY-FM. In addition, she served as a sports and entertainment reporter as well as a weather announcer at CFCN-TV and TSN.
Denis has been one of the co-hosts of CHUM-FM's morning show from July 2, 1986 to present. Roger, Rick and Marilyn, co-hosting with Roger Ashby and Rick Hodge, then Roger and Marilyn after Hodge's departure in June 2008 (Hodge's replacement, Darren B. Lamb, resigned from the station in December 2017 and is now called Marilyn Denis and Jamar).

Denis found herself working for two separate media companies after the CTVglobemedia purchase of CHUM Limited and the subsequent offering of five Citytv stations to Rogers Media, as required by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. Denis revealed that she would leave Cityline after 19 years to pursue new and future opportunities with the CTV Television Network in an attempt to fix this situation. Denis appeared on May 23, 2008.
Denis revealed in June 2008 that she would be hosting The Marilyn Denis Show on CTV, which was supposed to premiere in fall 2010. However, the program premiered on CTV on January 10, 2011. She continues to host her highly regarded national show as of January 2022.
Denis' alma mater, the University of Idaho, was awarded an honorary PhD in Humanities Letters. On May 13, 2017, Denis gave the commencement address at the University of Idaho.
