Maria Reynolds (née Lewis, 1768-April 24, 1828), née Lewis, was James Reynolds' wife and was Alexander Hamilton's mistress between 1791 and 1792.
Following the introduction of the Reynolds Pamphlet, she became a focus of intense scrutiny, leading to much criticism of America's first political scandal.
Early life
Maria Reynolds, also known as "Maria Lewis," was born in New York City on March 30, 1768, the granddaughter of Susanna Van Der Burgh and her second husband, Richard Lewis. Susannah and Sarah, her six half-siblings, as well as Col. Lewis DuBois and Captain Henry DuBois, and five full siblings, at least two of whom (older sisters) survived to adulthood. Richard Lewis seems not to have been wealthy: he was a fisherman and/or labourer, but he didn't appear to have been well-off: Richard Lewis did not appear to have been well-off, and he didn't appear to have a name. Susanna Van Der Burgh Lewis, however, could write at least her name, and Maria Lewis grew up literate, although largely uneducated. Maria Lewis married James Reynolds on July 28, 1783, when she was 15, the oldest known woman in 1783. Reynolds had served in the Revolutionary War in the commissary branch and was older than Maria by at least two years. He attempted to request compensation from the government frequently after the war. Maria had one child with Reynolds, a daughter named Susan who was born August 18, 1785, and later baptized in October.
Later life
Maria married Dr. Mathew, who had worked as a housekeeper in 1806. Susan Reynolds came to live with her mother in 1808 and spent many years with her in Philadelphia. Susan was married several times before but never happily. However, Josepha Philips, whom Maria raised from the age 12 after Susan's death at the age 39, was born two children. Maria Reynolds, now Mathew, was praised for her marriage to the doctor, who was compared by her acquaintance Peter Grotjan as "highly amiable and handsome." She became a member of the Methodist Church and put her life behind her. "She loved...the love and kindness of all who knew her." She died on March 25, 1828.
