Maria Cole (née Hawkins; August 1, 1922 – July 10, 2012) was an American jazz singer and the mother of singer Natalie Cole, born in 1922.
Early life
Cole was born in Boston and was Charlotte Hawkins Brown's niece. Mingo Hawkins, her father, was a letter carrier. Carol's mother died while giving birth to her sister.
Spurgeon Ellington, a member of the Tuskegee Airmen in World War II, was married in 1943 by her mother. He died on a training flight.
Maria married Nat King Cole on March 28, 1948 (Easter Sunday). Adam Clayton Powell Jr. married the Coles in Harlem's Abyssinian Baptist Church. They had five children: Natalie (1950-2005), who lived in Los Angeles, and Carole (1941–2009, Maria's niece), who died of lung cancer at the age of 64; and twin daughters, Casey and Timolin (born September 26, 1961), who died on October 6, 1961. Maria helped him through his final illness and then stayed with him until his death.
