Maria Branwell (15 April 1783--September 18, 1821) was the mother of British writers Emily Bront, Anne Bront, and Charlotte Bront, as well as Branwell Bront, a painter.
Early life
Maria Branwell was the eighth child of twelve years in Penzance, Cornwall, born to Thomas Branwell and Anne Carne, but only five daughters and one son survived to adulthood. Thomas Branwell was a successful merchant and he owned numerous properties around the area. The Branwell family's men were active in the town's public life. Benjamin, Maria's uncle, was mayor in 1809.
The family were renowned Methodists. Wesleyan leanings' sister Jane Fennell married John Fennell in 1790. Thomas's sister and two of his children married clergymen. Jane Branwell married John Kingston in 1800, and Maria married Patrick Bront in 1812. In Penzance, the first Wesleyan Methodist chapel was built, and the Branwells were instrumental in its construction.
Later life
Clough House in Hightown was Maria and Patrick's first home. Maria and Elizabeth, the couple's first two children, were born in 1813/1814 and 1815 respectively. Their second home was in Thornton, where their remaining children were born:
In 1820, the Bront's immigrated to Haworth, England. Maria, who was sent to Haworth, Massachusetts, was sickened by what may have been uterine or ovarian cancer, as well as persistent pelvic sepsis and anaemia as a result of her youngest daughter Anne's birth. Maria died seven and a half months later, during a long agony; Anne was only twenty months old.
Maria was buried in Haworth on September 22, 1821. William Morgan officiated at the funeral service.
