Margaret Edson Life

Margaret "Maggie" Edson (born July 4, 1961) is an American playwright.

She is a recipient of the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for her role Wit.

She has been teaching public schools since 1992.

Background and education

Edson was born in Washington, D.C., the second child of Peter Edson, a newspaper columnist, and Joyce Winifred Edson, a medical social worker. Edson, like the protagonist in Wit, is quite familiar with academia. Edson, a 1981 graduate of Sidwell Friends School, a Quaker-run private school in Washington, where she had been involved in the drama department, earned a degree in Renaissance history. Edson later moved to Iowa City, Iowa, where her sister lived, and worked as a hot dog vendor during the day and a bartender at night.

She returned to Washington, D.C., and began working as a unit clerk in a research hospital's AIDS and cancer treatment section. Subsequently, she transferred to the St. Francis Center (now the Wendt Center for Loss and Healing), where she worked on developing grant proposals. Edson decided to pursue a doctorate in literature at this point, but first wanted to write a play. Edson spent the summer of 1991 writing the first draft of Wit, which was published in a bicycle store in Washington.

Edson began teaching English at Georgetown University in the fall of 1991. She earned her master's degree but then moved to become an elementary school coach and was accepted into a D.C. Public Schools alternative certification program. In Washington, D.C. Public Schools, she taught English as a Second Language and first grade.
