Marcus Samuelsson (born Kassahun Tsegie, 1971) is an Ethiopian Swedish chef and restaurateur.

He is the head chef of Red Rooster in Harlem, New York.

Early life and education

Born in Ethiopia, Kassahun Joar Tsegie was born. Tsegiegie's father, an Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church priest, is a member of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. When he was three years old, his mother died as a result of a tuberculosis epidemic. Parts Unknown he and his elder sister, Fantaye, were separated from their family during the Ethiopian Civil War, which began in 1974, as detailed in Samuel's appearance on Anthony Bourdain. Anne-Marie and Lennart Samuelsson, a homemaker and a geologist, respectively, adopted the siblings in Gothenburg, Sweden, subsequently. Marcus and Linda Samuelsson's names were changed to Marcus and Linda Samuelsson. Anna Samuelsson, the family's adopted sister, is also adopted. Tsegie, the father of eight others (the chef's half-siblings), still lives in the Ethiopian village where Samuelsson was born.

Samuelsson, who was inspired by his maternal grandmother in Sweden, attended the Culinary Institute in Göteborg (Gothenburg), where he was born. He apprenticed in Switzerland and Austria, then went to the United States in 1994 as an apprentice at Restaurant Aquavit.

Personal life

Samuelsson is married to the model Gate (Maya) Haile. Their wedding took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. They live in Harlem. They have a son and a daughter of Samuelsson. The Samuelssons revealed on December 4, 2021, that they were expecting a child (to be named Grace Ethiopia) in 2022.

Samuelsson serves on the board of directors for Careers Through Culinary Arts Program (C-CAP). He has been a UNICEF ambassador since 2000, and the Three Goats Organization's co-founders, he and his wife are also co-founders.

Samuelsson, 24, became executive chef of Aquavit and shortly after became the youngest restaurant critic to be given a three-star restaurant review by The New York Times. The James Beard Foundation named him "Best Chef: New York City" in 2003. He opened Riingo, his second restaurant in New York serving Japanese-influenced American cuisine the same year.

Samuelsson is a cookbook author with titles in both English and Swedish in addition to his fame as a world-class chef. The James Beard Foundation named Soul of a New Cuisine, a 2006 African-inspired cookbook. Aquavit and the New Scandinavian Cuisine, En Smakresa ("A Journey of Flavour"), and Street Food are among Samuelsson's written books.

Samuelsson, a visiting professor of International Culinary Science at the Ume University School of Restaurant and Culinary Arts in Sweden, is a Professor of International Culinary Science. Inner Chef, which premiered on Discovery Home Channel in 2005, has been on television, and BET J's Urban Cuisine, which is now Centric, has been broadcast on BET J. His cuisine blends international influences with traditional cuisines from Sweden, Japan, and Africa.

Samuelsson was the guest chef for the first state dinner of the Barack Obama presidency on November 24, 2009. The dinner, which was in honor of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, was served on the South Lawn and mainly vegetarian. Samuelsson is said to have mixed sustainable and regional foods that reflect the best in American cuisine while still eliciting the flavors of India. Samuelsson's menu featured red lentil soup, roasted potato dumplings, and green curry prawns. During the Clinton administration, a tradition of guest chefs serving as the White House chef for special occasions began.

Samuelsson is an advisor to The Institute of Culinary Education in New York City.

In December 2010, Red Rooster, his restaurant, opened in Harlem, opening in December 2010. In March 2011, Red Rooster held a fundraising dinner for the Democratic National Committee. At the dinner, President Obama attended. The $30,800-per-plate case raised $1.5 million.

Samuelsson and Clarion Hotels unveiled a restaurant concept called Kitchen & Table in the fall of 2012. The concept's first restaurant at Clarion Hotel Arlanda Airport opened in 2013, and it was held at all Clarion Hotels in Sweden and Norway from 2013 to 2014.

Samuelsson opened Streetbird Rotisserie, a restaurant that featured fried and rotisserie chicken, as well as a setting that pays homage to Harlem's hip-hop heritage. Samuelsson has appeared on television, including on CNN, MSNBC's The Dylan Ratigan Show; he has been a judge on Guy's Grocery Games Top Chef, Iron Chef USA, Iron Chef America, and Chopped, as well as Chopped's Chief Chef. The Inner Chef and Urban Cuisine were two of his own television shows. On the television One show My Momma Throws Down, he served as a judge.

On Bravo's television series Top Chef Masters, he competed alongside 21 world-renowned chefs in early 2010. Samuelsson won the competition, earning $115,000 for UNICEF's grassroots initiative The Tap Project. He appeared on Iron Chef America regularly in 2011 and was a contestant on the fourth season of The Next Iron Chef, competing against nine other chefs for the chance to be branded a "Iron Chef" and be a contestant. Samuelsson was dropped in the fifth episode of the series, finishing in sixth place.

Samuelsson competed in and won Chopped All Stars 2012: Judges Remix after being on the Food Network show Chopped consistently. He was given $50,000 for his charity, the Careers Through Culinary Arts Program. Chopped, Chopped Junior, Beat Bobby Flay, Cooks vs. Cons, The Kitchen, and Star Plates are among Samuelsson's regular guest judges on Food Network.

Samuelsson was the subject of a lengthy interview with Terry Gross on NPR on June 28, 2012.

On the second season of the American television series The Taste, he made his debut as a judge in 2014.

In 2015, he appeared in Parts Unknown, as the focus of the episode's visit to Ethiopia was Ethiopia.

Samuelsson appeared on the radio show Wait Wait! Don't Tell Me! on October 8, 2016. In June 2017, he appeared on the Another Round podcast.

Samuelsson began appearing in BuzzFeed's Tasty video series in particular, as well as attending a segment of BuzzFeed's flagship food show Worth It in a segment shot in Red Rooster where his fried chicken was named personal "Worth It Winner" Steven Lim. Samuelsson became executive chef-in-residence in Tasty in August 2018.
