Marco Stefano Belinelli (Italian pronunciation: [ˈmarko beliˈnɛlli]; born 25 March 1986) is an Italian professional basketball player and the team captain for Virtus Bologna of the Lega Basket Serie A (LBA) and the EuroLeague. He was selected 18th overall in the 2007 NBA draft by the Golden State Warriors. In 2014, he won the NBA championship with the San Antonio Spurs, becoming the first Italian player to do so. He won the Three-Point Contest during the 2014 NBA All-Star Weekend. He played in the 2007, 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2017 editions of the FIBA EuroBasket and the 2006 and 2019 editions of the FIBA World Championship with the Italian national basketball team.

Professional career

Belinelli competed in Virtus Bologna and Fortitudo Bologna in the Italian Serie A and EuroLeague for Virtus Bologna and Fortitudo Bologna. He lost the EuroLeague Finals against Maccabi Tel Aviv in 2004, and he won the Serie A title with Fortitudo in 2005.

Belinelli, who was drafted #18 in the first round of the 2007 NBA draft by the Golden State Warriors, scored 37 points in his first NBA Summer League game against the New Orleans Hornets, including 5-on-7 from behind the arc, while the Warriors won by 1110-102, with 5 boards, 2 assists, and 1 steal. His result is tied for second place in the highest scoring game in Vegas summer league history, behind Keith Bogans' 38 goals as a member of the Orlando Magic in 2004. Belinelli finished his Summer League with an average of 22.8 points per game in four games with the Warriors before returning to Italy to compete in EuroBasket 2007. In a game the Warriors lost to the Atlanta Hawks on December 19, he scored 27 points on 19 December 19th.

On July 30, 2009, he was traded to Devean George by Devean George, joining Italian national squad teammate Andrea Bargnani. On February 2nd, 2010, he appeared in his first NBA game against the Indiana Pacers.

Julian Wright was traded to the New Orleans Hornets on August 11, 2010. He became a restricted free agent after the 2010–11 season. He signed the $3.4 million qualifying bid to remain with the Hornets for one year on December 13, 2011.

Belinelli signed with the Chicago Bulls on July 24, 2012. Belinelli's reputation as a dependable player started against the Celtics in overtime, a game-winning layup against the Boston Nets, and a 3 point lead in a game against the Utah Jazz forced the Bulls to win by 5 seconds with 5 seconds remaining. In a game 7 victory over the Brooklyn Nets in the first round of the 2013 NBA Playoffs, Belinelli and Joakim Noah each scored 24 points.

Belinelli scored a career-high 32 points in a 101-105 loss to the New York Knicks on January 2, 2014.

Belinelli also won the Three-Point Contest in New Orleans this weekend, defeating Bradley Beal of the Washington Wizards in the second round after Beal equaled Belinelli's score in the initial round. Belinelli fired six straight shots at a single point in the tiebreaker, sweeping his fourth rack.

Belinelli's career began with a soaring percentage on field goal percentage, three-point percentage, and free-throw percentage in his first season with the Spurs.

Belinelli, a two-time defending champion Miami Heat, scored a critical 3 pointer in Game 3 of the 2014 NBA Finals, boosting San Antonio's lead to double digits. The Heat had risen, bringing the Spurs' half-time lead down to just seven points before Belinelli's three-pointer. He became the first Italian player to win an NBA championship after winning the 2014 finals.

Belinelli joined the Sacramento Kings on July 13, 2015. In a loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on December 30, 2015, he scored a season-high 28 points.

Belinelli was traded to the Charlotte Hornets in return for the draft rights to Malachi Richardson on July 7, 2016. Belinelli was traded by the Atlanta Hawks, along with Miles Plumlee and the 41st pick, Tyler Dorsey, in the 2017 NBA draft, in exchange for Dwight Howard and the 31st overall pick (Frank Jackson) in the 2017 NBA draft on June 20th. The Hawks waived him on February 9, 2018.

Belinelli signed with the Philadelphia 76ers on February 12, 2018. Marco made a two-point corner shot against the Boston Celtics in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals, sending the game to overtime, 89-89. The 76ers would lose 98-101 to the Celtics, but not the Celtics.

Belinelli signed with the San Antonio Spurs on July 20, 2018, marking his second stint in the franchise.

Belinelli departed the NBA and returned to Italy on November 26, 2020, signing a three-year contract with Virtus Bologna until June 2023. Virtus was defeated in the EuroCup semifinals by UNICS Kazan in April 2021, despite a winning record of 19–2. However, the season came to an end with a lot of success. In fact, Virtus defeated 4–0 both Basket Treviso and New Basket Brindisi in the semifinals on June 11, beating the first one in 20 years and the first one after 20 years.

The team won their second Supercup on September 21, 2021, defeating Olimpia Milano 90–84. Virtus also defeated Lietkabelis, Ulm, and Valencia in the first three rounds of the playoffs on May 20, 2022, beating Frutti Extra Bursaspor by 80–67, winning the EuroLeague for the first time since 14 years. However, Virtus was defeated 4–2 by Olimpia Milan in the national finals, despite ending the regular season at the top position and having stunned 3–0 both Pesaro and Tortona in the first two rounds of playoffs.

Virtus won its third Supercup on September 29, 2022, after being disqualified Milano in the semifinals, defeating Banco di Sardegna Sassari 72-69 for a back-to-back after winning the 2021 trophy.

National team career

Belinelli made his debut with the Italian national team in the 2006 FIBA World Championships. He scored 25 points against the United States national team in the tournament, including a dunk on Carmelo Anthony. He averaged 13.5 points per game in the tournament, becoming the best scorer of his team.

At the 2011 EuroBasket, he averaged 15.5 points per game, 12.0 points per game at the 2011 EuroBasket, 13.6 points per game at the 2013 EuroBasket, and 17.9 points per game at the 2017 EuroBasket.
