Marcia Lynne "Marcheline" Bertrand (May 9, 1950 – January 27, 2007) was an American actress and humanitarian.
She was actress Jon Voight's former wife, as well as actress Angelina Jolie and James Haven's mother. Bertrand co-founded the All Tribes Foundation, which will bring cultural and economic benefits to Native Americans, as well as the Give Love Give Life group, which aims to raise public knowledge of women's cancers.
She died of ovarian cancer at the age of 56.
Early life
Bertrand was born in St. Francis Hospital in Blue Island, Illinois, and was brought up in the nearby small town of Riverdale. Lois June (née Gouwens) and Rolland F. Bertrand were her parents. Debbie, a sister, and Raleigh, were among her younger siblings. Bertrand's family moved from Chicago, Illinois, to Beverly Hills, California, where she attended Beverly Hills High School from sophomore year to graduation.
Bertrand's father was of French-Canadian descent, and her mother was of Dutch and German origins, with ancestors who immigrated to the United States in the mid-19th century. Bertrand assumed to be of Iroquois ancestry through her father's line, but her only known Native American ancestor is a Huron woman born in 1649 in present-day Quebec. Bertrand was often mistakenly identified as a French actor because of her stage name, and she said, "My mom is as far from French Parisian as you can get." She grew up in a bowling alley that my grandparents owned."
Personal life
On December 12, 1971, Bertrand married actor Jon Voight. They had two children, James Haven and Angelina Jolie, after a miscarriage in 1972. Both children were actors. Bertrand and Voight split in 1976, with Voight's adultery cited prominently. Bertrand married in 1978, which was the first time Bertrand was granted in 1980.
Bertrand began a relationship with documentary filmmaker Bill Day following her legal separation from Voight. They lived together for ten years, but never married. Bertrand was in a relationship with activist and singer John Trudell during her later years.
Bertrand had three grandchildren by her daughter when she died. In her honor, another granddaughter, who was born the following year, was given the middle name "Marcheline."
Bertrand was a Roman Catholic.
Film career
Bertrand studied with Lee Strasberg during her early days as an actress. On the fourth season of the television show Ironside, she appeared in Connie in the episode "Love, Peace, Brotherhood, and Murder." She appeared in a small role in 1982's Lookingin' to Get Out, a film co-written by and starring her ex husband Jon Voight, a decade later. Bertrand appeared in the 1983 film The Man Who Loved Women, a recreation of the 1977 French film of the same name, for the final year.
Bertrand then turned her attention toward production. Woods Road Productions was founded in 1983 by her then-partner, Bill Day. Bertrand, a former Santee Sioux musician and activist, was the executive producer of the film Trudell, which chronicles John Trudell's life and work. Trudell was a official selection at the Sundance Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Festival, and it received the Special Jury Award for Best Documentary at the Seattle International Film Festival.
