Early life
In 1970 in Buffalo, New York, Jackson was born. He and his two siblings, a brother, and a sister grew up in Amherst, New York. He graduated from Amherst Central High School in 1988 and received a bachelor's degree from Calvin College in 1992 with a major in philosophy and minors in political science and environmental studies. He appeared in theatre productions while attending college.
On the MV Americana, Jackson served as a deck hand during the summers. He spent a few years on schooners, both in Michigan, and Maine as the first mate on the Mercantile after graduating from college. He has worked as a producer and host for WGVU, a National Public Radio affiliate in Michigan, since replacing Bill Freeman as the Morning Show's host in 1997.
Personal life
On April 27, 2002, Jackson married veterinarian Beth Hagenlocker. They live in Venice, Los Angeles, with their cats Penny, Charlie, and Snug.

Jackson, co-founded the Detroit Creativity Project, which teaches Detroit public school students how to be more effective communicators, as well as Hagenlocker, Key, Margaret Edwartowski, and Larry Joe Campbell. The Project, which was inspired by Dave Bing's words, was launched as a result of a series of cookouts held at Jackson and Hagenlocker's home with other actors, writers, and directors who had links to the city. In 2015, the scheme will grow to include 500 students in 19 separate schools.
Jackson and Hagenlocker are among the non-profit 826LA's who support the group, and Jackson is a regular attender of events.
Career
After attending a rehearsal to play the piano, Jackson began his improvised career with River City Improv, a Calvin University group. Jackson joined The Second City Detroit later in 1998, becoming a member of the main company. He appeared on "Phantom Menace to Society" in 1999 while in Second City Detroit.
In 2001, Jackson migrated to Los Angeles. He taught improv at Second City Hollywood. In 2003, he formed "The 313" a long-form improv group. The 313 is named for Detroit's zip code and is made up of mainly former Detroit residents, including Keegan-Michael Key, Larry Joe Campbell, Joshua Funk, Nyima Funk, Andy Cobb, Maribeth Monroe, and Jaime Moyer. The 313 continues to perform at comedy festivals around the country, including Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Detroit.
Jackson attended one of the first rehearsals of what would become the Thrilling Adventure Hour and became a member of the WorkJuice Players, playing Sparks Nevada and Marshal on Mars in the regular segment "Sparks Nevada, Marshal on Mars." The show has been running as a live stage performance since 2005 and has been available as a podcast since January 2011. Jackson appeared in the film Drones, which was written by Acker and Blacker and directed by Amber Benson and Adam Busch.
Jackson is one half of a double act with comedian Carrie Clifford in which they perform Sky & Nancy Collins, characters who live in Orange County and are trying stand-up for the first time because their families find them amusing. They have appeared on Last Comic Standing, Carson Daly's last Call, and the Hollywood Improv on Last Comic Standing.
Jackson appeared in the Fox Compton web series directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts. He has continued to work with Vogt-Roberts, including on the film The Kings of Summer in 2013 and the television series Mash Up on Comedy Central. Jackson has appeared in a number of other television shows, including Key & Peele, Arrested Growth, Happi Endings, The Middle, 2 Broke Girls, Modern Family, Hello Ladies, and Black-ish. Jackson appeared in the Amazon pilot The Rebels, which premiered online in 2014, but was not selected up for a complete collection. It was announced in February 2014 that Jim Griffin would appear in the Fox pilot titled Fatigue alongside Marcia Cross. The pilot was not selected as a part of a sequence.
Jackson continued his involvement with Schur by appearing in his comedy The Good Place as Shawn, first identified as the judge of conflicts between the Good Place and the Bad Place, but later revealed to be a supervisor of the Bad Place. Jackson is well known for his voiceover services, including movies such as President Wolfman, radio series Adventures in Odyssey, and a web series including Funny or Die Presents: Brick Novax's Diary.
