Hugo Pierre Leclercq (born 30 May 1994), better known by his stage name Madeon (), is a French DJ, record producer, guitarist, composer, and performer from Nantes, France.
He first came to widespread public notice via YouTube's "Pop Culture," where he performed a mash-up of 39 popular songs in real-time using a Novation Launchpad.
In its first few days of being available, Leclercq's first EP, The City, received millions of hits.
Adventure, his debut studio album, was released on March 27, 2015, and he has been nominated for two Electronic Music Awards, with Porter Robinson, for Single of the Year and Live Act of the Year.
Career beginnings
Leclercq began composing at the age of 11, and his band "Daemon" and Wayne Mont began creating house music under his new name, Madeon, which is an anagram of his previous name. The same year, he received a remix competition for "The Island" by Pendulum.
The following year, he went on to remix tracks by other electronic artists. On July 11, 2011 a video of Leclercq performing his mash-up "Pop Culture" was posted on YouTube, boosting him to international fame. It featured excerpts from thirty-nine songs mixed on-the-fly using a Novation Launchpad. In just a few days, the video went viral and saw over six million views in a matter of days. He had the idea, bought the Launchpad, and recorded the song all on the same day, according to a Reddit AMA he hosted in November 2019.
Allen & Heath's Xone:K2, Novation's Launch Control XL, and Ableton Live also used during live performances, apart from the Launchpads. His first live performance was in Paris in April 2011, where he was a support act to Yelle, and his debut in the United Kingdom was at The Nest in Dalston, London, where he appeared alongside the likes of Jacques Lu Conte.
Leclercq has appeared on "15 Minutes of Fame," Pete Tong's radio show on BBC Radio 1, with both his debut single "Icarus" and his remix for "Raise Your Armour" gaining full play on the programme. On January 27, 2012, Pete Tong's BBC Radio 1 gala event in Hull, where he appeared in a 20-minute set.
At the beginning of 2011, a debut EP was supposed to be out but it was later cancelled in favour of several singles. "Icarus" was his first single on his own label popcultur, and he was released on February 24, 2012.
Madeon appeared with Lady Gaga as the opening act in her Born This Way Ball tour. On her third studio album, Artpop, he later collaborated with Gaga on three tracks, "Gypsy," "Mary Jane Holland," and "Venus."
He was invited to attend four major American festivals, the Ultra Music Festival in Miami, Lollapalooza in Chicago, and the Electric Daisy Carnival in New York, as well as many UK dance music festivals, including the Dance Arena at the BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend in 2012; he also backed Swedish House Mafia's headlining set at the Milton Keynes Bowl. Leclercq debuted on DJ Mag in 2012, ranked at number 54. "Technicolor," Madeon's new single on August 3, 2013. Leclercq unveiled a track called "Cut the Kid," claiming that it was released circa 2011 or 2012.
Many of his songs have appeared in television franchises: "Icarus" was featured on "Imperium" and Forza Horizon's in-game soundtracks; EA Sports' FIFA 13 and FIFA 15 respectively. In Pro Evolution Soccer 2016, "You're On" was also included. In the first cinematic of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, "Finale" appears; "The City" appears in EA Sports' NHL 15, Need for Speed Rivals. On the official soundtrack of ESPN's Winter X Games XVII event in Tignes, France, "finale" and Leclercq's remix of "The Night Out" by Martin Solveig was included, and both performed on air. The bumper song for X Games broadcasts, "Finale," continues to be used.
