Madeline Merlo (born February 9, 1994 in Maple Ridge, British Columbia) is a Canadian country music singer-songwriter.

She signed to Open Road Recordings in 2013 and released her debut album, Free Soul, three years later.

In 2015, Merlo received the "Rising Star" award from the Canadian Country Music Association.

Early life

Merlo grew up in Maple Ridge, British Columbia. Her father was a funk musician, and the house was often filled with music. She had a desire to be a performer since the first time she sang in front of a crowd of people. In public school, she took part in her school talent show. She sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and after that performance she decided that she wanted to be a singer.

Throughout high school, Merlo played in a band and together they began gigging around. She also continued to hone her vocal skills by performing in musical theatre productions and taking every opportunity she could to further her skills as a performer.

Merlo credits seeing Shania Twain at the first concert she ever attended to be the reason she pursued the genre of country music. Seeing a successful Canadian woman from a small town gave Merlo the confidence to pursue her career.

Personal life

Merlo moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 2018. She is engaged to Chase Fann, an attorney in Nashville.

Career

Merlo performed songs and recorded music with BC-based writer and producer Dan Swinimer, who died before being signed. Swinimer hired her to his production firm "Manicdown Productions" and they worked together for nearly two years.

Swinimer invited Ron Kitchener of RGK Entertainment to Vancouver to see Merlo perform at the Railway Club in 2012. Merlo will officially sign with RGK Entertainment and Open Road Recordings in 2013 after this appearance. She released "Sinking Like a Stone," her debut single that was both produced and co-written by Swinimer a year later in February 2014. On the Billboard Canada Country chart, it dominated for twenty weeks, peaking at number 32.

On July 22, 2014, she unveiled a self-titled extended play on Open Road Recordings. Her single "Honey Jack" became a hit in Canada, landing her in the first slot on The Road Trip Tour alongside Dean Brody and Paul Brandt.

Merlo received the CCMA Rising Star Award and the BCCMA Female Artist of the Year in 2015. Madeline released a series of singles, including "War Paint," "Over and Over," and "Whatcha Want To Do About It," one of the top ten at Canadian Country Radio after those big wins. In 2016, she debutant Free Soul, her debut album.

Free Soul's single "War Paint" received fan approval on social media, and she came in at No. 11 for the No. 304. In its debut week, the most popular country song in Canada was No. 1. It was written in reaction to the death of one of her friends to mental illness. She dedicated the song to all those who suffer alone, in the hopes that it would give them hope and a will to fight and triumph.

"Motel Flamingo" was her 4th album to land in the Top 15 at Canadian Country Radio in 2017. her new song, "Neon Love," debuted on Canadian country radio in 2018, making it her fifth single to debut in the Top 15, despite being ranked in the top 15.

Madeline won the first episode of Songland's second season on April 13, 2020, and Shane McAnally produced her song "Champagne Night" written for Lady Antebellum and produced by Shane McAnally. "Kiss Kiss" and "It Didn't" followed her as her seventh and eighth Top 20 singles in Canada.

Merlo's debut U.S. record deal with BBR Music Group in Nashville in 2021. On September 23, 2022, she released the extended play Slide as part of their imprint Wheelhouse Records. Cole Swindell's album "She Had Me at Heads Carolina" featured her on the radio, as well as backing vocals.

Merlo appeared in Country Crush, a film in which a young woman struggling to make it as a country singer, in 2017. Sonata Dusk's singing voice was also included in My Little Pony: Equestria Girls – Rainbow Rocks.
