Mack Brown Career

Playing career

Brown, a three-sport athlete at Putnam County High School, played football, basketball, and baseball. He won All-State and Prep All-America awards, as well as Prep All-America recognition, and was named one of the top running backs in the country by Scholastic Magazine in his senior year. He was selected as the year's best player by the Tennessean.

He was offered a football scholarship to Vanderbilt University, where his brother Watson Brown was the starting quarterback. He played for Bill Pace and three touchdowns, as well as intercepting seven passes for 50 yards and a touchdown during the 1970 season.

Brown then matriculated to Florida State University. Brown was a head coach for Florida State under head coach Larry Jones. In the 1972 season, he had 31 rushing attempts for 98 yards and ten catches for 76 yards with no touchdowns. He started his teaching career as a student coach after five knee surgeries ended his career prematurely, after being lettered twice as a running back for the Seminoles.

Coaching career

Brown's first teaching gig at Florida State was as a student coach of wide receivers, a position he held in 1973 and 1974. He was the wide receivers coach at Southern Miss from 1975 to 1977. At Memphis State, I was followed by a one-year stint as a wide receivers coach.

He joined Iowa State as a wide receivers coach before being promoted to offensive coordinator for the 1979 season. Iowa State boosted their record to 6–5 in 1980, after going 3–8 years ago, thanks in large part to running back Dwayne Crutchfield (1,312 yards with 11 TD) and the remainder of Brown's offense. This year, the team scored 108 more points than they did in 1979. Despite starting out with a record of 5–1–1, the team set a new 5–1 record in 1981. RB Dwayne Crutchfield was a key focal point in Brown's offense once more, with a passing of 1,189 yards for 17 TD.

Brown came from LSU to LSU as the quarterbacks coach in 1982. The LSU Tigers improved their record to 8–3-1 from 3–7-1 the year before, in large part due to quarterback Alan Risher's guidance, who threw for 1,834 yards with 17 TD and 8 INT. He also passed the exam with a score of 63 percent. In the two seasons prior to Brown's arrival, Risher had thrown 14 TD in the previous two seasons combined.

Brown's first head coaching job began in 1983 as he led Appalachian State to a 6-5 record. He was seriously considering the head coaching role at LSU when Jerry Stovall was fired, but the job was moved to Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Bill Arnsparger in December 1983.

Brown played offensive coordinator for the Oklahoma Sooners during the 1984 season under head coach Barry Switzer. Oklahoma will play for 2,376 yards as a team that season, with a record of 216 yards per game. Danny Bradley will throw for nearly 1,000 yards against 5 INT. RB Lydell Carr, Steve Sewell, and Spencer Tillman combined to rush for 1,651 yards with 12 TD.

Brown's second head coaching position came with Tulane in 1985, where he also became the school's athletic director after a point shaving controversy that resulted in the omission of the men's basketball program. Despite getting off to a slow start (a 1–10 record in his first year), he continued his development, leading the Green Wave to a 4–7 record in 1986 and 1989, Tulane's fifth bowl game in over 40 years and last until 1998.

Brown was appointed head coach at North Carolina in 1988. Brown's first two teams had similar 1–10 records, the lowest two seasons that the Tar Heels have suffered on the track in modern times. Nevertheless, the first two years saw a quick return to normalcy. The Tar Heels finished 6–4–1 in 1990. By comparison, the Tar Heels had won only seven games in the last three years. The 1990 total was a tie between Georgia Tech, the Yellow Jackets' sole non-winner on record during the season, en route to a share of the national championship. The Tar Heels finished 7–4, barely missing a bowl bid in 1991.

In 1992, the Tar Heels came together. They finished 8-3 in the regular season and second in the Atlantic Coast Conference, and with a victory over Mississippi State in the Peach Bowl, they ended the season at 9-3. The Peach Bowl was the program's first bowl appearance since 1986 and their first bowl victory since 1982. They made their first appearance in a final Top 25 poll since 1982.

The 1992 season marked UNC's most fruitful period since the Charlie Justice era in the late 1940s. Brown coached the Tar Heels to five straight bowl games, including UNC's only two New Year's Day bowl games in more than a century (or three if one counts the 1992–93 Peach Bowl, which was played the day after New Year's to avoid a match with the Sugar Bowl). They were ranked in the AP Top 25 every week from October 1992 to the 1995 season. They reached the final rankings in four out of five years, with two straight appearances in the top ten. They also won ten regular-season games in 1993 and 1997, but that was only the second and third times the Tar Heels have achieved this. Brown was unable to win an ACC title in 1992 due to Florida State's involvement in the league, something the Tar Heels haven't accomplished since 1980.

Brown's time at UNC helped a team that had long played in the shadow of the school's powerhouse basketball team. All games at Kenan Memorial Stadium were almost sold out, with the exception being a standing-room only crowd of 62,000 that watched the Tar Heels play Florida State in 1997, the largest audience to attend a college football game on campus in the state of North Carolina. Brown was also involved in a big renovation of Kenan Stadium, which included upgraded team facilities and an extension to 60,000 seats.

In 1995, Brown was given the job as the head coaching position at Oklahoma. He resigned from his position and Howard Schnellenberger took it instead.

Brown accepted the head coaching job in Texas right after the 1997 season came to an end. In that year's Gator Bowl, the Tar Heels' defensive coordinator, Carl Torbush, coached them. Brown and the Gator Bowl to Torbush are two North Carolina staples from the 1997 regular season, according to Brown and the Gator Bowl to Torbush.

Brown was nicknamed "Coach February" in his early years at UT, owing to his success in recruiting top talent recruits. His detractors felt that with all the funds available at his disposal in Texas, as well as the talent he was recruiting from high school programs, he should have more to show for it than in the Holiday Bowl or Cotton Bowl Classic. They felt that he should be competing for Big 12 championships or even National Championships instead.

The Longhorns were all but eliminated from either of these two goals in five of Brown's first seven seasons. Since the two teams were in the same division of the Big 12, Texas' loss to Oklahoma meant that Texas would not win the south division of the tournament until Oklahoma lost at least two conference games. However, Brown led Texas to their second Big 12 championship game, where they were defeated by a higher-ranked Nebraska team that had not been defeated earlier this year. In 2001, the Browns defeated Texas in their 3rd Big 12 championship game. The Longhorns lost to the Sooners in the first year of the game, but they were given another opportunity when the Sooners lost to both Nebraska and Oklahoma State. Texas lost the Big 12 Championship Game to Colorado, a school that had been defeated by a substantial margin earlier this year. Many believed Texas would have won the BCS Championship game had they defeated Colorado. In 2002, a similar opportunity occurred. Oklahoma lost to Texas A&M and Oklahoma State after Oklahoma defeated Texas. However, Texas Tech lost, so Texas Tech did not qualify for the championship game.

Texas finished the regular season with a 10–2 record, and most observers believed they had the ability to win their first BCS bowl under Brown. However, when South Champion (and No. 1) was determined, it was only then that the country champion (and No. 10) was defeated. Oklahoma lost in the Big 12 championship game to North Champion Kansas State, while Kansas State earned the Big 12 Conference's automatic BCS bid as conference champion and joined Oklahoma in the BCS. No more than two teams from a single conference could be allowed to submit bids, according to the BCS rules. Texas was frozen out.

Despite Brown's continuing to lead the Longhorns to a bowl game in their first six years, he was not able to lead them to a Bowl Championship Series game, rather than settling each year for the Holiday Bowl or Cotton Bowl Classic. He was 3–3 in these games, with two of the three losses being at the hands of apparently inferior teams as judged by the rankings.

The Longhorns opened the season with a No. 1 on the season in 2004. The 7th national rankings had risen to No. 7 and had risen to No. 1. 5 players have been drafted into the annual matchup, with others having to leave No. 4 behind them. In the Red River Shootout, Oklahoma had 2 players. The Longhorns were shut down 12–0 by Oklahoma's 6-2 defeat. Texas has fallen to No. 1 in the state. Nineteen people were killed before returning to victory over No. 58. At No. 24, Missouri, 28-20, at No. 1. 24 Texas Tech, 51–21, and Colorado, 31–7. With a victory over No. 5, Texas tied for the most come from-behind victory in school history. After falling behind 35–7, 19 Oklahoma State, 55–35. Texas fell behind against Kansas again after this appearance, but the team pulled out a victory 27–23. Kansas head coach Mark Mangino inflamed controversy by saying that the officials were biased in favor of Texas because the conference needed a second team in a BCS bowl game, and Texas was in position to gain an at-large BCS bid. Texas has climbed to No. 1 after a string of victories. The Austin team beat arch-rival Texas A&M to Austin, who took victory 26–13. However, Oklahoma remained undefeated, ensuring that the Sooners would represent the Big 12 South in the championship game against a much lower ranked squad from the North Division. The loss to Oklahoma had kept Texas out of contention for a national or conference championship, and had apparently destined them to a non-BCS bowl as well.

Brown received criticism for lobbying on behalf of his team, which many believed was a factor in the University of Texas's Rose Bowl selection. Cal was denied their first Rose Bowl bid since 1958. Coach Brown said, "I thought it was a little classless how he was begging for votes." Cal quarterback Aaron Rodgers told reporters in Berkeley. "I think a team's record and the way you play should speak for itself." Cal's only loss on the road at USC was a 23–17 nailbiter. Cal won the game by a significant margin, more than doubling the number of yards in total yardage in the United States. With just over one minute remaining in the fourth quarter, the Golden Bears had a first-and-goal from the 9-yard line but couldn't convert. On the other hand, Texas's lone loss was a 12–0 loss to Oklahoma on a neutral field. The national championship teams, Cal and Texas, and USC, Oklahoma, respectively, did not qualify to compete. In that game, USC defeated Oklahoma 55-19. Nevertheless, Texas fans refer to the Holiday Bowl, where Cal was dealt a 45–31 loss at No.'s hands. 23 Texas Tech, a team that Texas defeated 51–21 earlier this season.

The Longhorns of Brown's accepted the opportunity to play in the Rose Bowl. Due primarily to the fact that the Rose Bowl traditionally pitted the winner of the Pac-10 against the Big Ten champion, it was the first visit by the Longhorns. Michigan, Texas's first opponent, was Texas, who was playing for the first time. Texas won the game 38–37 on a last second field goal by kicker Dusty Mangum, who had been dubbed one of the best Rose Bowl games of all time. Despite the success of the 2004 season, Coach Brown's resume was also lacking both a conference championship and a national championship.

Texas debuted at No. 1 on the season's first week. In every preseason poll, the USC came in second, 2nd behind the USC. Texas defeated their early rivals by a narrower 45–12 victory over Oklahoma, led by quarterback Vince Young. That was the sixth time the Longhorns have ranked second nationally, and they have won all six times. Texas opened the season 5–0 for the first time since 1983 with the win. Since losing to Georgia in the Cotton Bowl Classic, UT had national championship hopes for the first time.

Texas secured first place in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) standings for the first time since its inception. However, Texas fell back to No. 1 after a week of no. 1. In the BCS poll, the country fell 2nd, while the USC took the top spot. Both teams won all of their remaining games, with USC and Texas remaining ranked No. 1 in the United States. Throughout the regular season, 1 and #2 will be the most consistent.

In a highly awaited matchup, the two teams finally met in the BCS National Championship Game at the 2006 Rose Bowl. The only two unbeaten NCAA Division I-A (now FBS) teams (Auburn was also undefeated in 2004, but this was the first time two teams averaging over 50 points per game met). In every iteration of the BCS rankings, the 53-game winning streak was an NCAA record for teams competing against each other, and the tournament was also the first to have teams ranked first and second. In addition, a Heisman finalist in Vince Young were included in the game, as well as a USC's two Heisman winners (Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart). Texas eventually defeated USC 41–38, highlighted by a 4th and 5 touchdown run and 2 point conversion by Vince Young in the final minute, earning the Longhorns their first national championship in 34 years.

The year before losing to USC in the BCS Championship game, the year before, we now finish with the undisputed No. Texas debuted the No. 1 ranking in the 2006 season, with a rank that reached No. 1. With the NFL-departed quarterback Vince Young and freshman Colt McCoy, there was 2 in the optimistic pre-season polls, with NFL-departed quarterback Vince Young replacing him with freshman Colt McCoy. However, the Longhorns lost convincingly to No. 58. In Austin's second game of the season, 1 ranked Ohio State. The Horns thrashed Oklahoma in the Red River Shootout's second straight victory over them to jump into the Big 12 South driver's seat and entertain fantasies of a rematch with Ohio State in the national championship, but Texas was stunned on the road at Kansas State in the 10th game of the season. Despite losing 12–7 to intrastate rival Texas A&M, the Horns returned home utterly to win the Big 12 South, and even though McCoy returned for the annual matchup, the Horns were still needing a final victory to clinch the Big 12 South. The loss snapped UT's six-game winning streak over the Aggies, and the horns settled for the Alamo Bowl, where Texas defeated a 6–6 Iowa team in a close game to cap off a 10 win season.

Mack Brown was in his 10th season as the head coach of the Texas Longhorns, with a record of 93–22, the highest in Longhorn history. The 2007 Texas Longhorns football team debuted third in all-time rankings of both total wins and winning percentage, and were ranked in the Top Tends by several pre-season polls.

Despite hopes, seven UT players were suspended for various offences before and during the season. “I am really worried that four of our student-athletes had issues with the legislation this summer,” Brown said. That is not reflective of the high standard of excellence, character, and integrity that we have inherited at Texas for many years. It's sad that these latest activities have received so much negative feedback, but I do agree that overall, this is as good a group of kids as I have ever worked with. I think it will get worse over time," Mack Brown said in advance, but the players were more prominent than in previous years, but not in the past, but the players were still supporting them while condemning their behavior.

UT merchandise were the top-selling products among Collegiate Licensing Company buyers for the second year in a row. Mack Brown's annual salary was raised by $300,000, making him one of the top-paid coaches in the country. The package also contained bonuses for up to $3 million in compensation, including "$100,000 if he wins the Big 12 Championships this year, and $450,000 if he wins the national championship this year, as well as compensation based on the percent of players who have graduated." Brown's deal was extended through the 2016 season and includes buy-out provisions if another school wishes to recruit Brown.

Texas won their first four games, though three of them were closer than analysts had expected. The Kansas State Wildcats defeated Texas 41-21 for their second year in a row by no turnovers and 21 total points from defense and special teams in their next game. One touchdown on a kick return, one on a sack return, and another on an interceptor were allowed to score in a single season. The 41 points were the most scored against Texas in Austin since UCLA gave the Longhorns a 66–3 loss in 1997, the worst home loss in the Mack Brown era in Texas. Texas lost again last week in the 2007 Red River Shootout, 28-21. Texas opened conference season 0–2 for the first time since 1956, when the Longhorns were in the Southwest Conference and one year before Darrell Royal took over as head coach of the Longhorns. During Mack Brown's first decade of the 21st century, however, it was as bad as it had been. Texas defeated Nebraska 28-26 in their ninth regular season game, marking Brown's 100th victory at Texas. The Longhorns will defeat Oklahoma State and Texas Tech in their next two games, but the Longhorns will lose 30–38 in their final matchup against archrival Texas A&M. This was the Longhorns' second straight loss to the Aggies. Despite the loss, Texas defeated 11th-ranked Arizona State 52-34 to win the Holiday Bowl. The Longhorns finished the season 10–3, their seventh straight 10-win season, and the third longest in FBS history, trailing Florida State's 14 from 1987 to 1992. Miami's 8 from 1985 to 1992 was the longest in Florida.

In the USA Today Coaches Poll, the 2008 Texas Longhorns football team ranked 10th in the USA Today Coaches Poll. They made it to the top of the national rankings after winning their first four games and climbed to fifth position. Texas began Big 12 Conference play in October 4, 2008, with a trip to Boulder, Colorado, and a victory over the Colorado Buffaloes. In the 103rd Red River Shootout, the number-one ranked Oklahoma Sooners were defeated by the Oklahoma Sooners on October 11, 2008. It was the third time either team had won in four seasons and the first time either team had to face the other in the Red River Shootout.

The Longhorns climbed to first place in the AP, ESPN/USA Today, and Harris Polls after winning over OU. They won by a landslide over No. 10 in their next game. 11 Missouri in Austin, a new school, state, and conference attendance record have been set. It was the first time since 1977 for the Longhorns to play in a home football game. According to the AP, there is just one team in the AP. Texas's tenure as one of the top BCS standings was swiftly brought to an end; however, the Texas Tech Red Raiders came to a close. The Longhorns, who trailed the entire game, took the lead with one minute and twenty-eight seconds remaining on the clock in a game played before a record-breaking national television audience on November 1, 2008. Texas Tech won the game 39–33, leaving Texas out of the Big 12 Championship Game and national championship photos. Texas A&M, the Longhorns' longest-running rivalry rivalry, finished the 2008 regular season with a win over Texas A&M. When Texas defeated A&M 48–0 in 1898, the most significant margin of victory in the series's history was made. Texas nearly tied for the first time in 2008 by winning 49–9, the second-largest margin of victory for this rivalry series. Mack Brown's 200th victory in his career, as well as a new attendance record for UT, the State of Texas, the Big 12 Conference, and the southwest region. Texas will dominate the 2009 Fiesta Bowl by defeating Ohio State 24-21-20.

Texas won the Big 12 South Division for the ninth time in 2009 after going undefeated in the regular season. They won a spot in the national championship game against Alabama after defeating Nebraska in the Big 12 Championship Game. Colt McCoy was injured early in the game and did not return, leaving the game in the hands of an inexperienced true freshman Garrett Gilbert. Alabama defeated Texas to win the national title. Brown will be the Longhorns' head coach for four seasons. However, the teams will not be able to replicate previous years' success. The team had a losing streak in 2010 and was not eligible to play in a bowl game for the first time and only under Brown. Following that season's bowl game, Texas's Head Coach Jon May resigned on December 14, 2013.

Brown was named head coach at North Carolina after a five-year absence from teaching and 21 years after he left UNC for Texas on November 27, 2018. The Tar Heels beat the South Carolina Gamecocks 4-20 in his first game as North Carolina's coach in 22 years. Coincidentally, he was in 1988 against South Carolina in his first game as North Carolina's coach. The Tar Heels beat the Miami Hurricanes in the home opener a week later on a last-minute touchdown. They barely upset No. 2 two weeks later. Clemson's 1st ranked and defending national champion, but what would have been the go-ahead two-point conversion failed? It was the only close game Clemson had in the regular season.

Brown's Tar Heels defeated Georgia Tech 38–22 last week. Brown defeated the Tar Heels for their 72nd victory, tying Dick Crum as the winningest coach in school history. With a 20–17 victory over Duke two weeks later, he tied the record two weeks later. For the first time since 2016, UNC defeated NC State 41–10 to become bowl eligible on November 30, 2016. In the Military Bowl, they routed Temple 55–13.

Brown convinced Sam Howell, a highly regarded high school quarterback from Indian Trail, North Carolina (a suburb of Charlotte), to de-commit from Florida State early this year. Chazz Surratt, the quarterback for the previous two seasons under Larry Fedora, shifted to the defensive end of the ball and became a linebacker. Despite losing six games, Brown's clout was evident by the team's success on the track. The team was strong all season, never lost more than a touchdown, and came within a missed conversion from overthrowaching the defending national champions. The 2021 recruiting class was the second best recruiting class in the country, surpassing only Ohio State.

Brown led the Tar Heels to a tie for third place in the ACC in 2020 (divisional play had been suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic). The Tar Heels were the highest-ranked remaining ACC team, with both Clemson and Notre Dame selected for the College Football Playoff. It was the Tar Heels' first major-bowl appearance since the 1949 season.

The Browns were ranked ninth in the preseason AP Poll and then selected by the media to win the ACC Coastal Division in 2021. Sam Howell, a junior quarterback, was expected to be one of the Heisman Trophy's top candidates, and he was selected as the Preseason ACC Player of the Year. The Tar Heels came with a higher hopes than they had in over a decade. Nevertheless, a week one loss to unranked Virginia Tech and subsequent injuries to ACC cellar dwellers Georgia Tech and Florida State ended the season. Despite falling short of expectations, Brown was able to guide the Tar Heels to bowling privileges for the third straight season thanks in part to a dramatic, 58-55 victory over Wake Forest, only the third time the Tar Heels have defeated a team ranked in the top 10 of a major media poll. Despite losing the Duke's Mayo Bowl to South Carolina and ending the season with a losing record for the first time since his return, Brown signed his second consecutive top-15 recruiting class of his second stint as the Tar Heel head coach.

Brown has started a tradition of lighting the Morehead-Patterson Bell Tower in Chapel Hill after every victory.

As we celebrated their 30-10 victory over the North Carolina Tarheels on Wednesday, West Virginia Mountaineers head coach Neil Brown was injected in Mayonnaise. Since finishing the regular season with a 9-4 record, Brown has been the Mountaineers coach since 2019 and has led the team to their best record during his tenure. When the Mountaineers were selected to finish last in the 14-team Big 12, few expected that result.

Mack Brown destroys NCAA for denying Tarheels' appeal for Devontez Walker's eligibility after transfer from Kent State to UNC

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 8, 2023
After the Tarheels' appeals for immediate eligibility for transfer receiver Devontez Walker, the University of North Carolina football coach Mack Brown went back to the ground on the NCAA. Walker walked the sideline for the first week, but the school announced the decision less than a week after he was suspended, but not for the 17th-ranked Tar Heels' season-opening victory over South Carolina. Brown capped a long and blunt statement: 'You're incompetence, NCAA.' SHAME ON YOU!'
