Lyfe Jennings Career

Career

Lyfe returned to his musical aspirations in 2002 after completing ten years in prison. He released a four-song demo CD two days after being released from jail in December 2002. He appeared at The Apollo a month after the LP was announced. He was booed as he stepped onto the stage, but the Apollo audience was captivated by his gritty falsetto and lyrical songwriting, winning five amateur-night titles in a row. During his Apollo "residency," Lyfe's four-song demo CD sold around 1,000 copies. Lyfe's increasing success prompted him to move to New York City and pursue a major-label contract. Lyfe 268-192 was released in August 2004 and Columbia Records gave him a deal and announced his debut. The album was reissued with a new iteration of "Hypothetically" as a bonus track starring American Idol winner Fantasia, a year after its debut.

In August 2006, Lyfe unveiled a more hip-hop-oriented sequel The Phoenix, with Three 6 Mafia and Young Buck appearing in guest roles. Lyfe Change was launched in April 2008, starring a handful of recent production employees as well as a T.I. verse. Jennings. Lyfe eventually signed a new Warner Bros. album and began working on a new one, tentatively titled Sooner or Later, which he said would be his last. The album was finally released in August 2010 and featured guest spots from Bryan-Michael Cox, Warryn Campbell, Fabolous, Bobby Valentino, Ludacris, Anthony Hamilton, and Jazmine Sullivan. Lyfe served in another jail term for his conduct stemming from a 2008 domestic violence.

With Lucid, he returned to music in October 2013 and was first released on the Mass Appeal label in October 2013. It peaked in the Top ten of Billboard's R&B charts, as with any of his previous studio debuts. Tree of Lyfe, which was primarily in his home studio, was recorded in June 2015. Lyfe Jennings' latest album, Tree of Lyfe, calls it his most personal work to date, and it was made at his home studio in Greenwood, Mississippi. Lyfe Jennings' response regarding his current musical philosophy is one of reflection and experience: "Everybody seems to feel the need to reinvent themselves." I don't believe you can reinvent the truth. It's what it is. I'm not focused on reinvention. I want to go deeper. "This album reaffirms the reasons why people started loving this music in the first place."
