Louis Linwood Voit III, born February 13, 1991), is an American professional baseball first baseman for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball (MLB).

He made his MLB debut with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2017 and later played for them in 2018 before being traded to the Yankees throughout the year.

He was the Yankees' starting first baseman by 2020.

Personal life

In October 2017, Voit got engaged to Victoria Rigman, and the two married in 2018. On May 28, 2021, the couple welcomed a daughter. John, his younger brother, played defensive tackle for the Army Black Knights football team.

Amateur career

Voit attended Lafayette High School in Wildwood, Missouri. In his first three years as a first baseman and third baseman in Lafayette's first three years, as a catcher in his senior year. He has also played for their football team as a fullback and middle linebacker.

Voit as a footballer at NCAA Division I, but he didn't get to play football, but shoulder injuries ended his football career. In the 32nd round of the 2009 Major League Baseball draft, the Kansas City Royals selected Voit, but he did not sign. Voit played for the Missouri State Bears for four years while attending Missouri State University.

Voit played for the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2011 and was named a league all-star. In 2012, he batted.298 with six home runs and 46 runs batted in (RBIs), in 62 games. In the 2012 MLB draft, he ripped the labrum in his right shoulder and went unelected. He played in 54 games as a senior in 2013, winning.299 with two home runs and 30 RBIs. In the 22nd round of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft, Voit was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals after his senior year.

Professional career

Voit began his career as a catcher with the State College Spikes of the Class A-Short Season New York-Penn League. In 46 games played, he was in 2013 for all of 2013 and batted.242 with two home runs and 16 runs batted in (RBIs). In 93 games, he batted.276 with nine home runs and 51 RBIs. He was drafted in first base in 2014 and spent the remainder of the season with the Palm Beach Cardinals of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League. He returned to Palm Beach in 2015, compiling a.273 batting average with 11 home runs and 77 RBIs in 130 games. Voit played for the Springfield Cardinals of the Class AA Texas League in 2016, where he hit.397/.382/.477 with 19 home runs and 74 RBIs in 134 games. Voit was born in 2017 with the Memphis Redbirds of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League.

The Cardinals promoted Voit to the major leagues on June 25, 2017. He was batting.322 in 70 games for Memphis prior to his promotion.

After being struck by a pitch, he made his Pittsburgh Pirates call-up and reached base on the same night. Voit started against the Cincinnati Reds the next day and knocked him off Austin Brice for his first major league victory in 8–2 victory. He made his first major league home run on July 3. Voit batted.246 with four home runs, 18 RBIs, and a.736 OPS in 114 at-bats for St. Louis in 2017.

Chasen Shreve and Giovanny Gallegos traded Voit and bonus pool money to the New York Yankees on July 27, 2018. Voit was sent by the Yankees to the Scranton/Wilkes Barre RailRiders of the Class AAA International League, and the Yankees promoted him to the major leagues on August 2. After he batted 3-for-16 (.188) in five games, the Yankees sent Voit back to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on August 13. Voit batted 8-for-22 (.364) in his first seven games with the RailRiders. Voit was called back up after Didi Gregorius was placed on the 10-day disabled list on August 21, but Voit was recalled.

Voit took over the Yankees' starting first baseman position from Greg Bird. On September 20, he scored his tenth home run for the Yankees, becoming the twelfth player on the Yankees to reach ten home runs this season. The Yankees set a new major league team record for most players on one team with 10 or more home runs in a season when Voit reached the 10-homer mark. Voit was named American League Player of the Week on October 1 after hitting.458 with three home runs and eight runs batted in during the previous week. In 39 games for the Yankees in 2018, Voit batted.333 with 14 home runs, 33 RBIs, and a 1.095 OPS (on base plus slugging).

Voit was named AL Player of the Week on April 29, 2019, after hitting.433 with 13 hits, four home runs, and 10 RBIs for the previous week. He had contact with the lowest number of pitches he swung outside the strike zone (44.2%) of all major leaguers. Voit underwent bilateral core muscle surgery after the season.

Voit also announced on Twitter that he would change his number from No. 1 after the signing of Gerrit Cole. Cole wore No. 45 to No. 59 in honor of his brother's birthday, so he could wear No. 59. 45.

On Opening Day 2020, Voit was the Yankees' starting first baseman. In the Yankees' 8-6 victory over Baltimore on July 30, 2020, he reached his first grand slam in his career. In the Yankees' 50th game, Voit scored his 20th home run of the season, making him the third player in franchise history to reach 20 home runs after Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle. Voit's home run appeared in the same inning in which the Yankees made five home runs, setting a new franchise record and tying a major league record.

Voit had 22 home runs this season, leading the major leagues. He and Yankees teammate DJ LeMahieu, who made the most popular baseball team in the country, hit the first two players to lead MLB in home runs and batting average since 1959.

Voit had torn his meniscus in one of his knees and required surgery on March 27, 2021. He was on the 10-day injured list in the 2021 season and is now on the 2021 season. Voit was activated on May 11, 2021, following a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre. Voit struck his first walk-off hit on June 23, an RBI single that scored Tyler Wade to beat the Kansas City Royals 6–5.

During a 12–1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on July 6, Voitt played his first five-hit game, going 5-for-6, a triple, three RBIs, and scoring a run. Voit continued to be limited by injuries, causing the Yankees to sign first baseman Anthony Rizzo before the 2021 trade deadline. During the 2021 season, Voit appeared in 68 games, winning 11 home runs in 213 at bats.

The Yankees traded Voit to the San Diego Padres for Justin Lange on March 18, 2022, days after the Yankees re-signed Rizzo. Pham offered to combat Voit on April 19, 2022, after collided with Tommy Pham's teammate Tyler Stephenson at home plate when unsuccessfully trying to score.

Voit, C. J. Abrams, MacKenzie Gore, James Wood, Jarlin Williams, and Jarlin Susana were traded to the Washington Nationals in exchange for Juan Soto and Josh Bell on August 2, 2022. Eric Hosmer would have joined the Nationals but they were on his no-trade pledge, so they took Voit to Washington.
