Luis Antonio Gokim Tagle (TAH-glay) is a Filipino prelate of the Catholic Church who is currently the Pro-Prefect for the Section of Evangelization of Dicastery (formerly the Congregation of Peoples) since June 5, 2022, and as the President of the Intersecrated Religious Commission since December 8, 2019. He was Manila's 32nd Archbishop from 2011 to 2019. Tagle is the Cardinal-Bishop of San Felice da Cantalice (pro hac vice) and has served as the President of Caritas Internationalis, Grand Chancellor of Pontifical Urbaniana University, and as a member of several departments and dicasteries in the Roman Curia.
Tagle, who more often prefers to be identified by his nickname "Chito" rather than by his clerical position, has been involved in several social issues in the Philippines, including helping the homeless and defending the Catholic Church's opposition to abortion, condomation, and what he has described as "practical atheism." He is often thought of as the "Asian Francis" of the Catholic Church of St. Thomas. Tagle has chastised the Catholic Church for using "harsh words" to describe LGBT, as well as divorced and remarried Catholics, who, according to Tagle, should be allowed to receive Holy Communion on a case-by-case basis.
Early life and studies
Manuel Topacio Tagle, an ethnic Tagalog and his Chinese Filipino wife, Milagros Gokim, who previously worked at Equitable PCI Bank, was born on June 21, 1957. Tagle was the youngest child of devout Catholic parents, Manuel Topacio Tagle, an ethnic Tagalog and his Chinese Filipino wife, Milagros Gokim.
Florencio, Tagle's paternal grandfather, was from Imus, Cavite; the Tagle family were from the Spanish, lowland Christian aristocracy known as the Principals, which were the upper crust of the Philippine Empire before the 1896 Philippine Revolution. Florencio was wounded by a bomb blast during the Second World War; Tagle's grandmother ran a local diner.
He was inspired by priest friends to enroll in the Jesuit San José Seminary, which took him to the Jesuit Ateneo de Manila University after finishing elementary and high school at Saint Andrew's School in Paraguay, Rizal, in 1973.
Tagle received a Bachelor of Arts degree in pre-divinity from Ateneo in 1977 and then a Master of Arts in theology from Loyola School of Theology in Ateneo. Tagle graduated with a Doctorate in Sacred Theology at the Catholic University of America from 1987 to 1991. He supervised Joseph A. Komonchak on "Episcopal Collegiality in Paul VI's Teaching and Practice." At the Institute of Pope Paul VI University, Tagle also attended doctrinal classes. Tagle was "one of the finest students I had in over 40 years of teaching" and "could have been the best theologian in the Philippines, or even in Asia" if not ordained bishop, according to Komonchak. Tagle has received honorary degrees from Catholic Theological Union and La Salle University. Tagle is fluent in speaking his native Tagalog language as well as the English and Italian languages. He is also an expert at reading Spanish, French, and Latin.
