Career

Benjamin's first acting role was as a child actor in Doctor Who in 1983, when he appeared in a younger version of the character Nyssa in Mawdryn Undead. She appeared on the children's television show Press Gang, where she portrayed Julie Craig. Benjamin appeared in two series of LWT sitcom Close to Home from 1989 to 1990, as Brent Nicholas' teenage daughter Kate Shepherd. Benjamin appeared in the British Satellite Broadcasting (BSB) galaxy Channel soap opera Jupiter Moon in 1990. She appeared in the Adrian Edmondson and Rik Mayall comedy Bottom in 1995.

Lisa Fowler appeared in the BBC soap opera EastEnders from 1998 to 2003. Benjamin was involved in one of the soap's most viewed storylines, "Who Shot Phil," during her time on the program. (2001) The plot revolved around her on-screen lover Phil Mitchell's assassination and who, out of the many prospective candidates, was the perpetrator. Her character was later revealed to be the shooter. In 2003, she was asked back for a short time to support Steve McFadden's upcoming departure, although she was on a break from the program. Benjamin appeared in the BBC television drama The Afternoon Play and the BBC medical drama Casualty after leaving EastEnders. She has appeared in pantomimes around London, as well as touring for 6 months in the play Frame. Benjamin was in talks with EastEnders in April 2006 about resurrecting Lisa Fowler's role, according to the Daily Mirror. In an interview, Benjamin confirmed that all rumors about her return to EastEnders were inaccurate.

Benjamin appeared on The X Factor: Battle of the Stars in June 2006, which she also won. Judge Louis Walsh mentored her. Heather in Stephen Fry's drama Kingdom appeared as Heather. Benjamin appeared in an episode of the BBC soap opera Doctors in October 2006. She appeared in All Star Family Fortunes in September 2008, raising £10,000 for her charity Rosie's Rainbow Fund. Benjamin appeared in The Pretender Agenda at the New Players Theatre with Lee Ryan, as well as appearing in the horror film Not Alone. Get Me Out of Here! In 2009, she appeared on the ITV1 programme "I'm a Celebrity." Benjamin returned to EastEnders for one episode in a storyline that was building up to Barbara Windsor's departure in August.

In 2013, Benjamin appeared in the West End stage show Hairspray's tour as Velma Von Tussle. Benjamin played Denise Ellisson in Casualty from April to July 2017. Benjamin played Lisa for a short time in July 2017, as part of on-screen daughter Louise Mitchell's (Tilly Keeper) bullying storyline.

Benjamin will be returning to EastEnders on a permanent basis on May 27th, 2019. On September 2, 2019, she returned and departed with Keeper in January 2020. Jan Fisher appeared in another episode of the BBC soap opera Doctors in May 2021. At the RTS Midlands Awards, she received the honor for her appearance in Doctors. The award was her first award in her career. She is expected to reprise her role in 2022 as Jan in Doctors.

The 53-year-old actress of EastEnders appeared sombre while out in Essex just two weeks after her husband Richard Taggart's divorce was announced following 17 years of marriage.
