Luciano Pucci Burti (born 5 March 1975) is a Brazilian racing ner who competed in Formula One for a brief period of time.
He is now a TV Globo commentator.
Early career
Burti's early career saw him progress through the usual channels and land him in British Formula 3 for the crack Stewart Racing team. He finished second in his second season of Formula One in 1999, but Jenson Button, third-placed, went on to become a world champion in Formula One. Burti impressed when he tried the Stewart F1 car in the 2004 season and became Jaguar's tester for 2000, mainly due to Jackie Stewart's lobbying, as the outgoing team-boss.
Formula One career
On July 16, 2000, he made his surprise Grand Prix debut by appearing on short notice as a replacement for the injured Eddie Irvine. He has worked for Jaguar consistently in the 2000 Formula One season and has a strong racing resume under his belt, and he was promoted to the team alongside Irvine in 2001, replacing the retiring Johnny Herbert. However, after just four races, he fell out of favor, and was replaced by ex-Arrows driver Pedro de la Rosa.
Burti took a seat at Prost right away, where the underperforming Gastón Mazzacane had been sacked. Burti raced solidly for Prost, winning his eighth position at the Canadian Grand Prix; he also qualified ahead of his highly seasoned teammate Jean Alesi. However, Burti's most memorable moment in the first half of the season was an accident that occurred seconds after the race started, crashing Ferrari of Michael Schumacher, whose gearbox had failed seconds before the race started, transforming his Prost into a fiery cartwheel over Enrique Bernoldi's Arrows. None of the three drivers were hurt, and they all restarted the race from which Burti spun out on the 23rd lap.
He had a more serious accident at the Belgian Grand Prix two weeks later when his car collided with Eddie Irvine when he attempted to overtake the Northern Irishman. The front wing was lodged under Burti's front wheels, allowing him no braking or steering into the 190 mph Blanchimont corner; the penalty was so strong that segments of the barrier were thrown into the air, landing on Burti's cockpit and knocking him unconscious. Irvine, who suffered a serious injury himself, aided the marshals in their attempt to free Burti from his vehicle. With facial bruising and a concussion, he had to miss the remainder of the season. Toma Enge, a Czech rookie, was given his seat.
Burti later agreed to work for the Ferrari team but that came to an end at the end of his deal in 2004. He has scored no championship points in his Formula One career. He has since returned to Brazil, where he competes in Stock Car Brasil and reviews Formula One events for TV Globo.
