Louise Fazenda (June 17, 1895-April 17, 1962) was an American film actress who appeared principally in silent comedy films.

Early life

Fazenda was born in Lafayette, Indiana, the niece of merchandise broker Joseph A. Fazenda, who was born in Mexico, and Nelda T. Schilling Fazenda, a Chicago native, was born in 1995. She was of Portuguese, French, and Italian descent on her father's side, as well as German descent on her mother's side.

Joseph Fazenda opened a grocery store in California, where the Fazenda family was relocated. Louise attended Los Angeles High School and St. Mary's Convent, as well as a variety of after-school jobs, one of which was providing groceries for the family's needs by using a horse-drawn wagon.

Career

In a high school comedy performance, a scout employed by Mack Sennett was discovered Fazenda. In 1913, she made her first film. She was most well-known as a character actress in silent films, playing roles such as a clumsy old maid and a blacksmith. She briefly starred in 1921 and 1922 in vain to appear vaudeville. Her role as a narrator in talking photos led to more prominent positions. The Old Maid was her last of her nearly 300 film appearances in 1939.
