Louisa Lawson Life

Louisa Lawson (née Albury) (17 February 1848 – August 1920) was an Australian poet, essayist, and feminist.

She was the mother of poet and author Henry Lawson.

Early life

Louisa Albury was born in 1848 at Guntawang Station near Gulgong, New South Wales, and the daughter of Henry Albury and Harriet Winn. She was the second of 12 children in a struggling family, and like many girls at the time, she stopped attending school at 13 years old. At the Methodist parsonage in Mudgee, New South Wales, Niels Larsen, a Norwegian sailor, married Niels Larsen (Peter Lawson), aged 18 on July 7th. He was often away gold mining or working with his father-in-law, leaving Annette with four children on her own, 1867, Peter 1869, Peter 1869, and Getrude 1877, the twin of Annette, who died at the age of eight months. Louisa was devastated by Annette's death for many years and left her other children in the care of her oldest son, Henry. Henry's relationship toward his mother was causing skepticism, and the two boys often clashed. In 1882, she and her children immigrated to Sydney, Australia, where she operated boarding houses.

Later life

Lawson died in 1905 but went on to write for Sydney newspapers and published The Lonely Crossing and Other Poems, a collection of 53 poems. She died in Gladesville Mental Hospital on Thursday, aged 72, after a long and painful illness. She was buried with her parents in Rookwood Cemetery's Church of England section on Saturday, August 14th.
