The Renegade Nell essay: CHRISTOPHER STEVENS writes about a family-friendly romp full of the Happy Valley writer's humor and swagger

CHRISTOPHER STEVENS: Holy olde folklore, Batman! And she's a princess. Great Britain recently gained a historical superhero to rival Spiderman or Captain America. Sally Wainwright, the screenwriter behind Happy Valley and Gentleman Jack, has written an extraordinary English heroine based on tales of highwaymen, fairy tales, Gothic novels, and a dash of Shakespeare. Renegade Nell (Disney+), a family-friendly romp that has been turned into an eight-part series with Disney's infinite budgets, is bursting with Wainwright's trademark wit and anti-authority swagger.

"Renegade Nell" Is the Unlikely Heroine You Will Fall in Love With

Move over Merida! Disney has a new red-headed heroine, but she isn't really one princess. "Reenegade Nell," a new eight-part swashbuckling adventure film set in the 18th century, is available on Disney Plus. You may not agree with me that this latest film is going to be up your street. However, I promise you're likely to be completely swept away if you give it a chance, as well as me. Nell Jackson, our heroine, is best known for her appearance as Orla in "Derry Girls," but there is no one more suited to this polar opposite role. Sally Wainwright, a writer who revives folklore and twists popular tropes, creates "Renegade Nell" — and it's very clever.

On Tuesday, Joely Richardson wowed in a glamorous red gown as she attended the star-studded premiere of Disney+'s Renegade Nell. In the pleated midi dress, the actress, 59, who appears as newspaper magnate Lady Eularia Moggerhange in the series, looked effortlessly chic. She teamed up with suede red heeled boots and gyming gold bangles, as well as a Hermes bag.

The maker of Happy Valley is back, starring a Derry Girl

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 22, 2024
In the latest series Renegade Nell, Derry Girls actress Louisa Harland of Dublin plays the daring Nell, a family show so fresh and innovative it belongs to a world entirely separate from its own. It was originally written as a play for Sally Wainwright's Cotswolds amateur dramatics group many years ago, and it's a feminist fantasy superhero folk tale about a female highwayman with special abilities bestowed on her by a sprite named Billy Blind. It's more than anything else a class war, slavery, black magic, and a miscarriage of justice, but it's more than anything else it's a roaring historical romp.

According to PATRICK MARMION, Woody Harrelson's A-lister woes

www.dailymail.co.uk, December 14, 2023
Taxi drivers in London should beware. Woody Harrelson sparked an ashtray while fleeing from the back of a taxi and was pursued by cops through Sloane Square when he was in town doing a play back in 2002. It was the subject of his 2017 film Lost in London. Now, the erstwhile hellraiser, a self-styled anarchist, marijuana missionary, and sugar-free vegan, best known for Cheers and Natural Born Killers, is back in another role alongside The Lord Of The Rings' Gollum, Andy Serkis, and Louisa Harland of Derry Girls. If you believe you can afford one of the few remaining seats (going for a shocking £120-£175), you'd better be warned that David Ireland's performance is both ostensibly and joyously insensitive. It's about a Hollywood A-lister who has been booked to appear in a West End play about a defunct Northern Irish Unionist paramilitary.

Louisa Harland, a female role, is portrayed as a girl who is comforted by a male pal

www.dailymail.co.uk, June 16, 2023
After watching the West End performance of Cabaret At The Kit Kat Club, an emotional Louisa Harland was helped by a male pal in the street. After a brief absence from the show, the actress, who appeared in Derry Girls as Orla McCool, cut a sombre figure as she sat outside on a bench. A tearful Louisa wiped her nose before her male companion drew her in for a warm hug as they said goodbye.
